Hi all, I was wondering if you could help. I am a long term amateur hobbyist, just getting into magic more now I have a bit of time on my hands with a new job. Except on Sunday I sliced my thumb whilst destoning an advocado!

So, I now have 4 stitches and a massive bandage stopping me from practicing anything ... so what should I spend my time doing, I don't want to waste my time just sitting around not advancing in my magic.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Tim

My sympathies. I had a similar incident one Sunday several years ago, except I was cutting potatoes, and sliced my palm, rather than my thumb. I kind of patched myself up with moist plasters and adhesive sutures.

If you really must practise something, you could try things like coin rolls, Charlier passes, one-handed top palms...

But why not take the time to read some magic books or watch a DVD or two?

Put the avocado on a hard surface, take your sharpest knife, chop hard down onto the nut, then lift the pear up and turn the knife as if it were the hands of a clock for which the pear is the face.

Also, it would be the ideal time to memorise a stack.

Three words: naked book test. I wish I had time to learn it all, this would be a great opportunity :)
(No, I mean learn the naked book test, not learn a book test naked... *sigh*)

Should the fancy take you, it would be an ideal time to turn your attentions to more mentalism based routines - the kind of things that don't require the use of thumbs (ouch!).

Read!

You'll at least get ideas for new material to practice when you're fixed up.

i think if you're asking on a forum about something as simple as this - then...well...

sorry - i know that sounds mean-spirited , but magicians and mentalists should be able to think on their feet and even thumbs...

if you've hurt your main hand, and are wondering what to do, then...

i appreciate your point, but I am not sitting around with nothing to do, in fact I am already doing somef reading etc. along with RL work and family time and new month old baby time

I really wanted to gauge the TM regulars and see the sort of things people would do if they had the time. Plus I wanted to start a conversation.

So hey, It didn't seem mean spirited (until you pointed it out) but I suppose with a one dimensional media like an internet forum, it is hard to really get what people are actually saying.

So Iain ... what would you do?

its seems you're busy enough already! :D

whenever I'm ill, or suddenly find i have free time - more often than not, i go back to the beginning, and re-read a classic of magic or mentalism...

i've gone through three paperback copies of Annemann's Practical Mental Magic/Effects...so i've bought the hardback now...

i can't help but read your posts with a "yelp" intermittently though; with that sore thumb of yours :D

i've put emoticons in, so you know when I'm being jokey/friendly...

To add to the good advice already given i would simply say read. Read all you can on theory, misdirection and the history of magic. Not only is it fascinating, it can really help to improve your understanding and presentation of magic. jim

Well I have Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia of Magic, winging its way from Amazon - it would be here already if it weren't for the postal strikes - so back to basics it is, thanks all

I didn't see the emoticons on here, otherwise I'd have put them in to show you that mine was too, a happy post.

I'm glad I found this forum...

and so to bed (before wifey thinks I've been on here too long.)

Night all
