It would have all been so much easier if Penguin had asked Alakazam to sell on their behalf in the UK and Alakazam had asked Penguin to ....., well, you get the picture! :)

On the subject of penguin uk, if you buy any of their instant downloads get them from the US site, that way you don't have to pay the VAT.

this is cool news, but not really any good for me as i still dont have a credit card. I dont see why the money conversion should be a problem for anyone, as you now can get fantastic products for cheaper.

Yes Ben but it's the Law in the U.K. to have comething called value added tax (V.A.T.) and because the Penguin Europe site doesn't display the full V.A.T. Fat price until checkout it seems as though the products are alot cheaper than they really are. It's not really about money conversion. Whereas if you buy the istant downloads off the US site, like MArk suggests, you will get exactly the same product with out the added VAT.

All the best,

Loads of jay sankey stuff and a few other bits and pieces. If I brought it from alakazem it would have cost me over £217 but I found out today that I have to pay the import tax but thats only about £30 so I'm still saving about £65

Tony Import tax is hit and miss so you may or may not have to pay it.

If the supplier is in the USA and makes a declaration on the package or on the paperwork that the items are a 'Gift' then there's no tax to pay. There's probably a limit to this generosity by the Customs & Excise so you may not always be lucky. If you're buying books then there's no import tax on them or VAT either. All the items I've had sent from various US suppliers have mentioned the content as either books or gifts and, so far, I haven't been asked to pay any tax on delivery. I suppose there's always a first time!

If you're buying from an EC source then there should be no tax either as it's already been paid in the country of supply.

Yeah the gift loophole doesn't always work, but it increases your chances significantly :)
