How to make smoke.

Postby Belfast » Oct 16th, '09, 16:11

Hello everybody, i searched for this or similiar but i found nothing.

So, i need smoke effects. Not to big, and not to small. I need anything that i can throw from my hand, you know something portable and small. I dont want to much smoke. I think you all get it. So i need a how-to or tutorial on how to make something that makes a little smoke. The reason i need this is mostly is for my Cuff-Box trick. It's a trick when i have a box and handcuffs. Then i let the spectators check the box my hands and the cuffs. Then let one of the spectators lock handcuffs on both my arms, then i open the box put my hands in the box (there are little holes on the box big enough for my hands) Then a spectator locks the box ( maybe i will even let them blindfold me ) and then after a little moment ( this is where i will use smoke ) i call up a spectator open the box and as soon as he opens it smoke comes up and when the smoke is gone and everything clear the spectators see the handcuffs gone of my hand.

I am sure dry ice could be utilised to meet your needs.

There are several how to's on the uses and applications of dry ice freely available online.

hmmm maybe some use of a tiny bit of pyro? if you want that type of 'poof' outcome when the box is opened.

Potassium nitrate and sugar make quite a bit of smoke, it depends on how long the smoke needs to last and what kind of cloud you want. Potassium nitrate is used in the production of certain explosives though so caution is recommended.

My thoughts regarding the dry ice was more that it could be something that was triggered within the box rather than something you held.

If you mean Talcum Powder, surely it will just sit inside the box, and everyone will just think "Why does this magician use Talc Powder in the magic, trick. Maybe he was trying to make it look like smoke... Bless..."

All honesty? Buy a real smoke gimmick, I know it might be effort, but they are worth it if you wear a jacket. Don't buy Trevor Duffy's though...

I would avoid Ellusionists Ultrasmoke, I bought one and regret it, plus if you are in the UK it can be hard to find refills, I think dry ice is a good idea, I am not sure of the routine but can you do it wearing gloves, Lance Burton style (I am aware that other magicians wear gloves but Lance was the first name to mind).

Go to a model shop and buy a smoker used for model boats. It will runsoff a 9v battery (even though they are 12v units) and makes smoke from organic oil.

About 30 sec with that turned on will give you plenty of smoke.

Only problem is that the unit cannot be turned upside down, as its open topped.
