Faith trust and fairy dust

Postby taneous » May 6th, '04, 12:22

I'm doing a kid's show for a group of 4 yr old girls at the end of the month. The mother has told me that the theme of the party is fairies and she would like it if i could somehow weave the theme into my show.
What I've got so far is a packet of this glitter stuff that sparkles in the light when you sprinkle it - so I was going to call it 'fairy dust' and levitate something with it. The only other thing I could think of was to pretend to catch a fairy and get it to 'fly around' under a silk, but I'm running a little low on creativity..
I thought I could hit the fairy under the silk with a wand till it stopped flying around  then the kid's could revive it by clapping or something (JK  )
Any ideas?

Man, you can't go around smashing poor defenceless little fairies, you'ld have all the kids in tears, not to mention the RSPCF coming after you. even if you could bring them back to life, the trauma would be too much for them.

I always thought you got fairy dust by grinding up fairies.

There's loads of wordplay with the word 'Fairy'

You can use Hairy, Scary, Mary (what am I going on about), Dairy, Wary,

Ok

Maybe not that much word play.

Imagine a Scary Hairy Wary Fairy called Mary :!: :!: :!:

jason flexes his fingers and engages brain.
okey dokey since you dont say if you have any kids props like change bags, stiff rope and the like i'll just have to be creative.
the fairy idea is a good one but frame your storry line around the fact that the kids can cunjure up the essence of a fair by saying a little ryme.
"hobgoblins and witches we want none".
"give us a fairy so the magic is done."

provided the kids concentrate then the fair essence captured under the silk will fly.

you can use fairy essence for a cut and restored rope trick a production from two tubes, professers knightmare / unequal wands avalable from boywonder at a great price.

apart from that you will need to tell me what props you have so that i can advise you further.

Just some ideas, some of which might even be practicable:

Magic colouring book effect with pictures of fairies. You can make these books yourself. Perhaps the fairy dust "brings out the colour in things"?

Use a fairy doll in effects. Vanish it, make it appear, make it float.

Use small fairies made of paper for IT effects.

If you bought a Dee Light (sorry if I have spelled that wrong), perhaps you could say that is a glowing fairy flying around.

Have some jumbo cards with fairies dressed in different colours. Use them to do things like a simple monte effect (might be a bit too much for four year olds, perhaps) or get them to guess which fairy is in the envelope. It matches the one they chose.

Thanks for the ideas. They're great.
I had considered the D'lite thing - but I've just got my C.U.P.S. under control - it is a nice idea :)
The kid's props I have:
Comedy funnel
Colouring in book
Dove pan
Rope and some more rope and a stiff rope
Squaring the circle
Bloomin Blossom
Sponge balls
Lot's of silks for a silk production
A hat
A cup and saucer for vanishing glass of water
and a whole lot of other stuff I never use - linking rings, zombie ball...

magicdiscoman I really like your rhyme/spell - that'll go down really well :)

PS. I'll be nice to the fairy - I promise..
Dandruff?? - that's even more gross than a ground up fairy

Perhaps you could do a little experiment after you've caught your fairy and politly extracted some fairy dustand see what the fairy dust does to normal everyday objects eg it makes them disappear and reappear or shrink or expand etc etc.

I'm sure you'll be able to work fairy dust into almost any effect really.

I like the idea of catching a fairy though and all I can suggest for that is reworking some PK effects to make it look like the fairy is moving around or gone invisible and is moving stuff around.

Perhaps you could pretend that the children will only see the fairy when they believe in them and obviously they won't see the fairy but they will see what the fairy is moving.

You could even use the fairy as your secret assistant when you are doing a cups and balls routinewith the final load being something that represents a fairy.

I hope this gives you some ideas or helps in some way.

All the best,

Will Wood

Cliff has mentioned http://practical-magic.com which has a very good section of children's magic with large images to see the items. I'm not suggesting you start spending squillions with them but it might give you some ideas about how to adapt or use your existing items.

Sponge Balls

Postby Happy Toad » May 6th, '04, 17:43

Not many people know this but like many flying creatures fairies are born from eggs, not just any egg but very light ( as you'd imagine ) and various coloured kinda spongy round eggs

Of course being fairy eggs they are magical and can fly around invisibly, they can multiply and even change colour.

http://practical-magic.com/ cups overload.....need money now.....need money now.

most of the tricks you have can be enhanced with a fair ryme or you could get a clove puppet with a fairy costume on.
a fairy wand that lights up.

just think how can i incorporate a fairy theme to this trick.

Word of warning, be very wary of using glitter when performing a party at someones house, it is a nightmare to get out of the carpet and the lady of the house may grow to hate you because of it.
