Norfolk boy in training. Hey Everyone

Postby SleepingZombie » Nov 1st, '09, 21:59

'ello 'ello, hows goes it?

I'm Ben. I'm 22, norfolk layity currently attempting to learn the fine art of illusion. I'm mainly playing with cards for the moment. I'm also interested in the crafts history and origins. Can anyone recomend any good books or documentories?

Through the powers of the internet (being currently unaware of any magic shops in norfolk) I've managed to get my hands on a few boxes of bicycle cards and some DVDs to learn from. Mainly Ben Salinas Card Stunts and Oz Pearlman's Born To Perform Card Magic but I have a few others. Hoping to post some reviews soon, not sure how helpfull they'll be with my limited knolege, but hopefully I'll be able to give the 'n00b' point of view.

Thanks, Ben.

Welcome young man from the East of Anglia

Postby Kryzal » Nov 1st, '09, 22:43

Greetings and welcome to this place of interchange and interknowledge. I am Kryzal and have been here many years - mostly watching and waiting - mostly remaining silent - and mostly appearing somewhat strange. I hope you choose to return here and become a regular participant in the views and reviews of all. I don't do that for I am Kryzal and I am strange and really rather old. Your comments interest me. I travel widely and have been to the wizards of the west recently. Even more recently (hence my lack of messages) I have seen the "shamen" of the middle world. I admit to being slightly afraid but nonetheless overawed! I wish you well as I do all young people who choose to practise the craft of illusion. If you can decipher my messages (and I talk in riddles quite deliberately, I'm afraid) I can help and advise but only if asked. You say there are no magic shops in Norfolk. My boy!, my boy! you have not sought! For there is one of the best in the land! Now you wish me to tell you where. I say, seek and ask entry! How much do you want to succeed? Seek. Use your International Network or whatever you choose. When you have sought and cannot find - ask Kryzal (who will gently abuse you for not looking hard enough but is regarded by most as a kindly soul!) I wish you well. Kryzal x

Hi Ben,

Hows it going?

The lovely Lady of mystery will reccomend the best books for you.

(Sorry Lomster, couldn't resist it :D )

In all seriousness though, listen to what the Lomster tells you, it really is invaluable!

awww aren't you sweet! :D

Hi Ben, welcome to TM.

Well Mark Wilson's Complete Course is always a great place to start, it covers everything from cards, coins to silks and even some stage illusions. Royal Road is also a great book to read for cards but you might find it easier to follow after you've read Mark Wilson.

Welcome to TM, Ben. I'm with Lommie on the above books. I also like the Joshua Jay book that came out last year ("Magic: The Complete Course").

Thanks for all the kind messages. You've made me feel very welcome.

Thank you for the recomendations, I've got Mark Willsons book on order and I'm looking at getting some on the history of our craft. I'm now ordering The Illustrated History of Magic by Milbourne Christopher possably a few others to start me on my way.

Kryzal, your riddles are intriguing but assuming I am correct with their meanings decipherable with a little patience. You tease me with the knolege that I seek. I am aware of possably 5 or 6 magic shops in norfolk but am unaware of their locations or quality, any advice would be greatly apreciated.

Have to run, but I shall return to roam the wilds of this great forum.

Ben

The Milbourne Christopher book is superb and is still being updated at intervals to include newer arrivals.

Any of the Jim Steinmeyer books will also give lots of information about the greats and not so greats of Magic - Hiding The Elephant, The Magic of Alan Wakeling, The Glorious Deception (about Chung Ling Soo) are all worth reading. Hocus Pocus by Paul Kieve is also excellent, it's written for the younger magish and doesn't give quite as much detail but certainly adds to the store of knowledge on many of the known names.
