Coin purses....... urrgh!

Postby bobcatmagic » Nov 4th, '09, 13:32

I want to add a trick to my working repertoire that needs the use of something similar to a coin purse. It's essentially a silk vanish and re-appearance back in the "thing" you got it from. (Something nice for the kiddies. Like the trick on the Flicking Fingers/Alexander De Cova DVD but I won't repeat the effect with a purse frame).
But... I can't bring myself to use a purse. It doesn't fit my style, character and if I'm really honest it compromises my masculinity a little. Sure, I could make a gag about it but I don't see how it is logical to use a purse that looks like something a 70 year old granny would have. I've thought about this for ages but can't come up with an alternative. I don't think that any purse looks particularly manly but I need some sort of pouch, preferably with some form of closing device (not a zip) that looks good. The closest I've come is a leather pouch with a sprung top (where you squeeze on the sides to open it) but this still looks very girly and "purse like" I think.
I've brainstormed some cylinder type cannisters and other hard containers but these don't work well as you can't squeeze them, thereby retaining the tt as the silk is removed. Plus reset aint good because you can't then put the tip back into it with the silk ready for the next perfromance.
Any suggestions?

You dont want to look like a nancy with a purse, but you are happy to wave around a silk hankie

your a magician, doing a magic trick.. use a black leather coin purse like everybody else.

or,

use a sock, or a childs shoe, or a packet of cigarettes ( like Fay Presto) or a tobacco pouch, or a packet of sweets, or... well just about any small container that closes. ( A pill bottle for example)

That suggests to me that you are either young or insecure about your own sexuality ??

I use a blue plastic childrens' purse frame, occasionally wear pink and blow someone a kiss if they call me gay. So what, it's just a tool.

bobcat you don't say were you are but if your in the uk then theres a girls shop called clairs that sells purse frames on socks, little ones that come in many designs including skull and cross bones and money symbols which would suit your needs and at the same time give you a talking point.

girls like to keep things in little sock purses, phones in socks too, of cause if you are using the rule of thumb to do the silk vanish then why not use the empty hand move to produce a sponge ball from your purse frame then the silk, or am I missing the point completely.

and pretty coloured ones at that :D !!

How about a leather pouch, a bit like the 'bag of gold' things in medieval times - that might look a bit more butch.

This was almost word for word what I was thinking. You could even make one, wouldn't be too hard if you were a little handy with a needle and thread and could get a square of leather or heavy cloth. If it was leather you could make it look old, add a bit of a backstory to it or something.

Even with a granny-type coin purse, you could add a story to it and get away with it just fine. "My granny was a practicing witch, she made this purse and it has been handed down to me" etc. Then you've got the patter for the effect pretty much there.

That's great. My uncle uses a similar sort of thing made from a kangaroo's scrotum. Quite the conversation starter.

i rember going into a strange tourist shop in the states years ago, and you could get a pouch made from a bulls scrotum. And to make it more macho, the clasp that held it shut was the jaw and fangs of a diamond back rattle snake.
