That Derren Brown thing...

Postby Matthius88 » Nov 6th, '09, 00:24

Ok, I'm not really into Mentalism or Mind trickery, but I was watching an old episode of Trick of The Mind just now and one particular thing really struck my interest.

I don't know if anyone remembers or knows the effect, but basicall Derren gets a stranger to challenge him to a staring competition and they end up freaking out, getting sweats, feelings of paranoia/fear and one guy is nearly sick.

Just wondered if this was an effect that is on the market, so to speak, and if so does it have a name or is there a book with something similar? I realise it might not be for someone who is totally in the dark on any mentalism and though I dont personally practice that side of magic (at least not at the moment). I have a copy of Pure Effect, but haven't read through it because I want to get on with my Royal Road and Bob Longe stuff. Still, if anyone could point me in the rough direction to look, it would be apreciated.

Really frustrating isn't it.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

thats a good thing as far as i can see...we should all still have things we dont know how they work, and more importantly not want to know how they work...just enjoy them, and let them inspire you instead...

A good tip when staring at someone: look straight into only one of their eye. The person you're looking at can't see that, an it gets rid of your tension, since it's more like staring at an object that maintaining a stare at somebody.

I'm sure this is not the method for the trick you mentionned, but works anyway, try it ;)

Hi I want to learn an effect where the person kind enough to help me out on stage is made to feel horrible and the audience laugh at them

Any ideas?

As opposed to... going onto a forum and making snide comments at somone who's asked a fair question in an attempt to make them feel low and raise your own self-esteem?

I dont think anyone was laughing particularly, i think everyone was just a bit freaked out by it.

Of course I'm interested in this too, but up until very recently there was a clip on Youtube by the old geezer who got really frazzled by it.

You know, the guy drinking the bottled water with the tats.

Well he posted a video of himself dropping hints that maybe, just maybe.....he was a stooge. It was all a bit cryptic, but that was the vibe.

It's frustrating that the video has been removed, i really didnt imagine it, but it'd be disappointing if that were the case. The fact that it has been removed only adds fuel to the fire dont you think?

I'm revealing nothing, but when I finally saw this I had one thought and one thought alone about the method. I then discussed the effect with a friend of mine, and without missing a beat he suggested the exact same method. I could be wrong, of course, and I don't know for certain if it's even feasible, but I'm pretty sure with enough work, and a telly budget, I could achieve this, and without stoogery.

My self esteem needs no raising, darling.

Thanks for your concern though.

It is a horrible idea for a trick and my snark was intended to make the OP realise he wanted to do something that was horrible for the poor spec who nicely was helping him/her out.

I love the way you follow me round having a go at all my sarcastic posts. It's sweet. I have a twitter account where I am snarky too if you would like that? I am also often snarky on facebook and the genii forum. Feel free to chastise me there too. If it makes you feel better.

xx
