And do understand that most of what you hear about NLP tends to be hype more than fact. It's a very "iffy" mode of operation and even viewed with strong skepticism within the majority of intellectual circles... and it really isn't how Derren Brown creates all of his miracles, it's a presentation line such as calling what I do "Telepathy"

I know you were looking for books, but I wanted to warn you up front that NLP is highly overrated. You'd do yourself much more good simply taking classes in effective communications and psychology in that these are the areas from which NLP evolved.

Don't get me wrong, the concepts around NLP can be employed and as you personally develop your understanding and experience around the system you will see reasonable results, BUT it is not 100% and for that matter, rarely more than 75-80% effective according to its own advocates. Just like using Body Language, in the real world a base-line is required and that typically involves numerous sessions of interaction between you and the subject before they are established.

However, a decent (albeit highly commercial) introduction to the concept of NLP is Anthony Robbin's UNLIMITED POWER.

What do you want to be able to do?

If it is Derren Brown style stuff, you'd be better of getting 13 Steps.

Derren Brown has never uttered the words NLP, except maybe to say "I never say that I use NLP" :)

Out of print (Bandler fell out with the publishers) and now quite tricky to find and expensive, but yes this is the one. :D

I may have a clouded memory of it but I seem to remember Mr Brown explaining how he had convinced Simon Pegg he wanted a red BMX using NLP in some video I saw. I tried YouTube but could not locate it. (Actually Google found it but I cannot view it in my country due to copyright).

Then again it may well have been someone "exposing" DB as I cannot remember it exactly.

As for reference material, if it is DB motivated, there is a comprehensive list of suggested titles in the back of Tricks of the Mind, if I remember correctly he suggests some of the earlier work by Bandler and Grinder.

Found a version that works in the UK

You're right though, Derren never mentions NLP, it's what the comments along side the video say is the technique.

My bad.

haha, yeah, he left it open to interpretation didn't he?

But I agree there, if you're wanting to do "what derren does" then his very own book is a nice introduction to his thinking, followed by 13 steps

You know those ' Teach yourself ' books you see peppered all over Waterstones?

Well even if you don't, the Teach Yourself NLP book is a basic introduction to it, and you'll learn through reading it that NLP can be a great form of self-therapy.

I'm sure you can find it on Amazon. There's so many books on it out there, but i found this one to be the most accessible. It won't turn you into Derren, but you may well take something positive out of it.
