How many?

Postby TheStoner » Nov 16th, '09, 13:51

Does anyone know (very roughly) how many magicians there are in the UK? I suppose this should be split into four groups -

1) Amateurs who do magic for their own fun and maybe family/friends
2) Amateurs who do the occasional paying event (e.g. £50 at a party or pub)
3) Pros who have website, business cards, regular paying work, but are not known to the general public
4) "Famous" magicians (i.e. known to laymen - Paul Daniels, Derren Brown and, errr, errr...)

I'd guess -

1) 100,000
2) 10,000
3) 2,000
4) 2

i don't understand why you'd want to know...what difference does it make?

you'd also have to add the growing number of workers who do lots of paying gigs, but also have a seperate/alternative job too...

they won't be classed as amateurs...

you should also factor in the amateur who does too many gigs too soon, and ruin it for the others! :D

)4, is a bit more than two.

living, people know all about Geoff Durham, and to an extent Paul Zennon. This is thanks to their stints on Countdown.

Many still know about Wayne Dobson too. And quite a few are also familiar with the name Terry Seabrook.

And dead.. well David Nixon, and Tommy cooper for two.

( and personaly i wouldnt get out of bed for £50.00 :)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

If you're a business then this would be market research.

Yikes! Hospitable tonight, aren't we!

Personally, for the average tv viewers, I would agree there are only 2 or 3 magicians who are household names and properly remembered.

As for the rest, I would go approx. with you Stoner.

I agree. I was trying to defend the OP, although I can see how I could be read as being hostile. Not my intention, though...

I hadn't seen your post Ted, i wouldn't think it's hostile at all. Perhaps to the people being hostile, but that cancels it out :D

Yeah but they are value opinions :P

Btw coming from over the pond and having little interest in this BEFORE about 6 months ago.

I did know about Terry Seabrook so I'd go 3 to 4 on the last one.

See two years ago i would have only been able to name two famous ... Paul Daniels, and Stephen Mulhern. In my opinion then DB wasnt a magician, he was a psychologist manipulator, but never magician...

Oh how our opinions change lol.

Indeed it is. Paul Daniels seems to be working most nights of the week one way or another yet young Stephen moved on to hosting, announcing and generally being around in a non-magical way. I'm sure he could still amaze if he wanted to.
