White Star by Jim Critchlow

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

God THANKYOU!

I saw this performed by somebody a while ago and thought he had said it was called White Staff. I've been looking for it for ages to go with my bizzarre set, obviously not finding it because I remembered the name wrong.

I've never performed this, I have an inkling on the method but even so, it got amazing reactions from the people I was with and myself. I love this sort of stuff.

Can't believe I had the name wrong. Another thing for the shopping list :D

Michael Murray performed this for me at Magic Box in Newcastle. Routine was brilliant and it had be stumped..just couldnt work out the method. I dont own OOTW but I know a routine of a spec seperating read a black. ITs just not quite as clean as I would like. I agree also the familiar story of Titanic gives so SO much to this effect... who am I kidding?.... The emotion IS the magic of this effect. So Much potential. I was but off by how manufactured it looked with the glossy "White Star" cards...just looked very "prop" like..... maybe its time to put it back on the wish list..

What do people think of his other effect "Till Death Do Us Part"...are they drastically different in terms of effect and audience response ?

White Star is one of my alltime fave effects. I ALWAYS do it, but only once during an evening, because it's so strong.

'Til Death'... is another matter. It's still a great effect which has always gotten me great reactions but it's not as immediate (from a performance perspective) as White Star. However, much like White Star, a little research and a lot of performance will go a long way :-)

Here's my review of 'Til Death' : http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic32526.php - As you can see, this one really polarises opinion but it's always worked well for me :)

cheers,

Sean

Till Death is VERY different from White Star, in effect and working.

I'm busy right now coming up with my own background story for Till Death, including a reasonable way for me to have come into possession of the photos in the first place. (My story also covers anybody complaining that the photos are too new.)

I think that White Star will be remembered as a classic in it's own right.

I close my parlour set with this routine and in the right setting and the use of some artifacts it's NEVER failed to get a superb reaction.

Take your time to perform this.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

How about a genuine White Star Gladstone Bag complete with G.F.Bull's busines card and full provenance? The only problem is the price! See http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G-F-Bull-White-St ... 45edbf29d9

I actually perform this without any artefacts - I simply use two of the pictures (one if each, if you get my meaning) as the anchor points.

Give one to each spectator and then ask them to try and get a feeling for the person in the picture they have and stop me at any of the pictures I run through when they get a feeling of affinity for any of them.

It still gets a massive reaction (and it packs smaller!!)
