Generally I'll be reading a book or watching a film and find a concept, idea or some old legend that really appeals to me. I'll then look at the types of tricks I can perform (levitation, transposition, ect) and see what types of things can be done with that idea.

But saying that, sometimes I'll see an interesting prop or material and pick it up for some magical use, I just don't know what at the time!
