Closeup Routining

Postby taneous » May 20th, '04, 15:20

I'm working a bit on my closeup routine. I have a really nice rubber band routine, then a ring on rubber band routine. I was thinking of following that up with some kind of ring to wallet thing - like ring flight, or Flight 204 by Sean fields.
I'm also working on Florida keys by Greg Wilson (similar to leaving home by Sankey) and then I was thinking of using the key on the ring in a key bending effect -in the spec's hand, and then use the keyring in 3 ring circus or something like that.

My question is this: I like the idea of using the same 'props' to link over to another effect, but I'm concerned that there may be too many of the same kind of effects - ie. penetrations. I'd also like to go into a spoon bending routine after that. What do you think??

try doing some coin tricks inbetween and use the link prop as the magic wand.
i often give out my haunted key as a wand when i do a scotch and soda set then do the haunted key and follow on to a ring penetration which leads onto three ring circus  transpose ring for wedding band and do himber ring joining then vaish there ring for ring on rose finale.

so you see you can make a routine with several repetitions of the same type of effect provided you can change or add a prop then the audience will think of it as a new trick, adding coins to a set alows for an excuse to swap out props and adds transpositions to your routines, coins also alow for coin to key and coin to ring transpos to feel natural to the spec.

I'm not convinced that you should always link one effect to the next by using the same props, maybe a couple at a time and then a change of tack. I think it can get confusing if there is always something in use that was also in use in the last trick. I would agree with MagicDiscoMan, intersperse your linked affects with a few standalones, that way you have a few more options as to what you do next and can work out what your audience is more likely to enjoy.

I'm inclined to agree that linking all of the props together might seem a bit odd.

Don't forget that you can always put a prop in your pocket, then bring it out again later. It might not, of course, actually be the same prop.

For example, there are a number of gimmicked Sharpie effects around at the moment. Bring out the pen, do a signed card to wallet effect (or whatever). Put the pen away. Later, do Sharpie through anything, apparently with the same pen.

I am not suggesting you must use either of those specific effects. The same applies to decks, dice, coins, keys or anything else you use.

hmm - that's what was bugging me about it. Thanks for the advice - I appreciate it. The 'to pocket' idea for a switch is nice - especially since the spec is now used to seeing a prop and won't necesarily question it if done naturally :)
