A culinary delight. An act of sheer genius.

I've eaten in the Fat Duck and nothing came close to baconnaisse:

I saw Baconnaise on The Daily Show a while back and wondered what other depths of culinary depravity the US has slumped to. Then I remembered the dubious delights of Twinkies, Miller Lite and, of course, McDonald's "food". Why is it that when you walk past a drive-in McDonald's, you smell something resembling a Sunday roast, but the "food" itself has to have highly flavoured goo smeared all over it to give it any kind of taste? what's making the lovely smell? Clearly, it's nothing they sell.

Baconnaise is healthier than regular mayo, containing fewer calories and less fat.

but it's all the nasty added chemicals and flavourings that I'd be worrying about. Sounds horrible.

I believe it has something to do with the beef fat they use to cook the fries.

Everything is made up of chemicals and the flavourings are Bacon flavourings, the best kind. Seriously though, full nutitional info can be found at the bottom of the page here: http://www.jdfoods.net/products/baconnaise.php

It's even kosher and suitable for vegetarians so everyone can enjoy it! I really can't see why world peace isn't just around the corner now. :D

It's like those diet fizzy drinks that are supposedly better for you because don't contain sugar. No sugar, but all manner of sweeteners instead. At least sugar will only rot your teeth and make you fat. I'm sure those sweeteners are nasty in the long term. I'd rather have rotten teeth and be fat than have cancer or some other nasty disease. (I'm fat, so I'm halfway there already).

Seconded. I never used to worry about things like that but increasingly I wonder what kind of effect these chemicals have once they get in to the blood stream.

As for McDonalds I could not agree more about needing the gunk to give it any flavour! I remember being a bit poorly once and buying a Big Mac for lunch, I could not manage to eat it (must have been pretty ill) so decided to just eat the "meat". It tasted like someone had boiled mince in to cardboard.

However the good thing about McDonalds though is the worldwide consistency. Whether you are in Australia, the US, Europe, UK - it all tastes the same. People like familiarity, it keeps them warm inside.

Yup. No matter what country you're in, you know what you're avoiding. The only interesting thing about McDonald's is that the circular one in Hamburg sells beer (or did 25 years ago). I'd much rather go to a tiny little cafe round the corner from a McDonald's and get something delicious and home made. You really do pay for quality in fast food.

Agreed.

I think the most interesting thing about McDonalds is that Ray Kroc does not consider himself to own a catering company, or retail outlet, he considers his business to be real estate. In McDonalds Corporate Headquarters they have the slogan "We are in the Real Estate Business" on the wall.

Explains things somewhat.

Yes Heineken (here in Greece at least). So I always opt for Coke :D (even though i haven't been to a McD for quite some years).

It would be quite awesome if they were selling cask ales in UK McDs :D (how I miss my last trip to Sheffield and Huddersfield : http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2598/374 ... 6c70_o.jpg :D )
