practice, what I want to know is, how long to go from not being able to do it at all to being able to blow up as many as you want when ever you want? and how much practice does that take a day?

that is the only safe way to blow up balloons. If your doing them in bulk, buy a small electric pump... All the specialist balloon dealers do them, If your making to order, then just buy a hand pump.

( As opposed to a penis pump, which is an entirly different thing)

and they are very inexpensive!

Size seems to help, but I have known a few small people who can do it.
Stretch the balloon fully a few times before blowing it. Make sure that your lips are holding the nozzle gently, not compressing it. And pull the end of the balloon away from your mouth to stretch the balloon once you begin.
Blow forcefully and continuously and it should inflate.
Blowing by mouth is far simpler than using a pump, and quicker if you are blowing in bulk.

Way too lazy to stick that in the innuendo bingo! :D

I'm still fascinated that my balloon pump blows air out of the nozzle on both the upstroke and downstroke. It's a brilliant piece of engineering, and yes, I do need to get out more. :D

Is that a discworld thing?

On a more related note I had a hernia once! not the greatest of experiences so i'll be sticking to using a pump. it's always good for a laugh too!

Close! It's very similar to the valve in a set of bagpipes which allows air to be blown in to the bag but not back out again. It's usually made from the same soft leather as used for the tongues in shoes and, in the piping world, is known as a 'Little Mac'! Balloon Pumps use two of 'em, apparently. Yes, I know, I need to get out more....
