If you are serious, it might be worth stating what sort of magic you are looking to learn.

"I want to do magic...but I don't want to be referred to as a magician." - A layman chatting to me about magic.

I would offer to help if you lived closer.

But...find your nearest magic club, and aproach them. that way, you will see some great lectures, make great friends, and gain knolwedge.

If your Sincere in you intentions, and want to learn , you should be able to find someone who is willing to teach you for free.

but you will need to show that you have a basic knolwedge of magic.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

davenpprts do lessons. Next session saturdays in march.

any magic shop who has a practitioner should do lessons. They are around 30 gbp per hour.

The problem with clubs is that they are not geared towards teaching. They can be a bunch of individuals who just show tricks. There is more to learning than just watching you need to have the opportunity to repeat. Same true of lectures. You will see some good stuff but won't necessarily become proficient.
The other problem is you need to know magic before they will let you in. Catch 22.

Not formaly, no... But it Depends on the club.

As a case in point,At Home counties after club drinkies, we are always swapping hints, and tips. :)
On a good night you learn way more after a meeting, than before. :)

You don't mention your age.

Some magic societies have junior sections which can be very helpful.

Colleges and universities will often have a number of people interested in magic and there may be an informal magic society.

Magic shops such as Davenports and International Magic might be a good place to ask for professionally based advice and training.

While there are many places for you to learn the techniques of magic, the real skill is to learn how to project your personality in order to entertain people. That is not something that you pick up from a book or a something that can be taught easily. It comes from lots of practice in front of an audience and by trying out different styles and seeing what works best for you, and more importantly what gets the best reactions from your audience.

Magic is great fun.
Good Luck.

Something to add..

If you are paying for magic lessons, you are the customer and as such should be able to check who the person is and that they are of a good enough standard to teach.

Im sure you will have many people offer to teach you for a fee, so check them out, see they are who they say they are and that they have done what they say they have.

Any reasonable Magi will probably have checkable credentials.

Just saying to be careful about who you spend your money on i guess... as i can imagine lots of peeps will see this post and ping you. Some possibly not even members on here.

I hate to say this, but your posts are so difficult to make sense of due to horrid spelling and grammar, I'm of the mind to think you're not a real person Jamie... not that we have members here that would pull our legs with the newbie role?

Sorry if that's not the case, but it's happened in recent months and offering poor language command tends to be one the the traits common to said puns. On the other hand, if you are a real person I will encourage you to work on your command of language a bit. Harry Blackstone used to kick every young person he knew, towards learning how to present yourself as "intelligent"... especially if you were calling yourself a "Magician" -- Language being one of the more important "secrets" tied to our craft.

When it comes to learning "the basics" if you need visual guidance, I'd suggest you track down the Jeff McBride Manipulation video series, they are quite good when it comes to learning the basics. Similarly, the Bill Tarr "Now You See it; Now You Don't" books as well as the Mark Wilson Course in Magic will give you more than a fair sense of foundation.

Though I have a serious bias towards Playing Cards I can tell you that they are a field within magic that's a life-time commitment. I remember seeing Vernon, well into his latter 70s, still practicing and learning or trying to improve upon his technique. So be careful to not let such things overwhelm you and limit your ability to learn about everything else that's out there... there's a lot more to magic and life than card tricks

And I'm sure if he ever does a written magic trick then Jamie will take your advice on board ;)
