jumbo coin manipulation act frustration

Postby Figaro » Dec 11th, '09, 13:21

hello.

recently I bought Gary kurtz Lets get Flurious DVD with his famous jumbo coin act in it.

I have to say I really love this routine.

but no matter how hard I practice.( and ive been practicing i swear to god..)

I keep doing these little mistakes.( flashing, wrong angle, all of this stuff..)

And i cant seem to make it smooth and give a magical 'flow' to it.

if I see other performers on youtube for isntance performing this routine. they all seem so natural with it. I really wonder how long theyve must been practicing this routine.

to be honest. I just got the DVD about a month ago.

but i HAVE been practicing EVERY day for at least 1 or 2 hours a day.

actually to be more honest, the first day I start practicing it looked GREAT!!!!!.

but now it seems to get worse and worse. I HATE myself when I flash the jumbo coin.

it doesnt seem magical at all anymore to me.

I actually dont even want to perform it anymore because of this.

people said to me; slow it down!!. which i have, and which helped me a lot. but as soon as i speed it up i dont have control over my movements and i mess up.

any help?

Flourious is a hard routine to get down. I think I was working on it for about six months before it got a public airing.

The difficult bit for me was stopping the flashing through the gap between the thumb and index finger. I did a lot of mirror work (this was before I got a video camera) and made a concious effort to control the turn of the wrist.

If you start to flash when you speed up, then you are not ready to speed up, or you are making too great a change. Make your speed increments much smaller, and you should progress at a better rate. Get a metronome, and practice to that so you don't rush in the middle of the routine.

Take care, Ian

Have you performed it to others recently? My favourite card trick seems really obvious to me and my old roommate as he's watched me perform it dozens of times. On the other hand when I perform it to a new audience I can get away with murder.
One part of my routine involves me holding some cards in my hand while the deck is handled, and one time while doing the routine I saw one of my audience members looking right at my barely concealed cards. Luckily he wasn't a dick and kept quiet so I continued and hoped for the best. At the end he told me he saw me put some cards in my pocket (I hadn't, I'd put them in the deck) but he couldn't work out how that helped me. So even though he saw my first and most vital move I still pulled it off.

My point is maybe your better than you think you are, you've got to try it on new audience members and be prepared to be caught and totally humiliated before you master the routine. Walk up to strangers offer to show them some magic (be prepared to be humiliated here as well).

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

My computer only allows a certain amount of text so this is in two parts.

The main thing you have to do is get the patter down. The whole point of patter is that your audience will make eye contact with you while your talking. When your about to do a move, relax, make eye contact, talk and wait for them to take their eyes of your hands. If you can do the move without looking your ready to perform.
You can make a coin disappear by just putting your hand in your pocket if you can maintain the correct level of eye contact while you do it.

If your still nervous do a different trick using only one of the slights and build up from there.
Don't be afraid to mess up, these are strangers, you will probably never see them again.

thank you all

Ian, that was exactly the problem i was struggling with.

to be honest you guys, I was overreacting a little bit, as Ian said, I also did a conscious effort of turning the wrist the right way. and slowed down everthing.

the thing which helped the most and which makes it looks flawless now is that i move both hands to the left while doing the secret move

i just forgot about this but its true; the bigger movement covers the small one.

it looks really great now. and im speeding up from this point

as for patter. i dont use patter. i perform it on music.

and yes magicians always downgrade theirselfs, were probably better than we think we are.
but I always want it to be as magical as possible. by eliminating anything that can cause suspicion.

thank you guys.

I had one more question tho;

at the end of the routine you produce a mega jumbo coin.

im having trouble fitting this coin in my jacket so i can produce it easily.

i have a breast pocket inside my left side jacket. but its just not that easy.

i know for sure there has to be an easier way of clipping or hanging the mega jumbo coin somehwere so i can produce it easily.

i was thinking of putting it in an old sock and hanging the sock from that side.

but its dangerous cause it might fall down.

you can get Jumbo Coin droppers, and holders.

maybe you could atatch a big bull dog clip to the waistband of your trousers, rather than having the coin in your pocket.
