Tomo's Custom Props aka TCP (haha)

Postby FairieSnuff » Dec 13th, '09, 18:21

Techincally not a market effect as such, but something this fab needs a review.

Product : - A custom made electronic gizmo that does something specific.

Cost :- Varies, but twas only a little over the cost of the actual componants.

Review :-

I've been currently working on a project that requires a specific thing to do a specific thing. I had the basic bits worked out, but wanted it wireless. After months of working on door bell systems etc with huge failure, I approached Tomo for a quote to do it for me. I was extreamly specific about what the product had to do and that it had to be very responsive.

Tomo had a look, and gave me a very reasonable quote, which was only slightly more than the cost of the bits, as he said it wouldnt actually be difficult or take long to do.

About three days later, it arrived in my hands, and it does exactly what i wanted it to do. He even pre-empted possible future workings with it and has left space for the item to be adapted or changed at a later date.
Im impressed at the service and quality of the work and will deffo be using again for other projects and already discussing another possibility. (you know the one lol..). I know others have also had custom bits made.
I do wish I had caved sooner though rather than burning my poor fingers many times in my attempts lol...

So any guys or gals out there with an idea, Tomo may just be able to help you out.

This must be the only review on TM where the thing being reviewed isn't mentioned once!

On the Sunday morning at Tabula Mentis, Fairie showed me an idea she'd come up with that uses a very subtle and well-spotted principle. The prototype was literally held together with sticky tape. Could I help?

I sketched out a schematic, calculated the juice it needs, built it, tested it, and there we are. A small part of very nice project that's going to creep out a lot of people.

MODS - This is exposure !!!!!

...and its blatently stealing my idea. I once designed a thing.

Seriously though, I emailed Tomo with an idea for a (different) thing and he replied with a great suggestion that makes the electronics so much easier. I am busy connecting bits of wire to a circuit right now. Thanks Tomo.

It strikes me that the help the basic gizmo gave to Fairie is something that can be applied to other "things" that people are building, and which need to be operated remotely. To this end, I can put together a small board that would act like a radio controlled switch. Trap the wires from your circuit in the terminal block on the board and the gizmo makes and breaks the circuit as you desire. At its simplest, it could replace the on/off switch to a piece of electronics. I can think of a few useful options off the top of my head, like multi-channel operation, momentary or "click on, click off" operation, delayed action, etc. that would be easy to implement without the board's hardware ever being bigger than a deck of cards split lengthways.

Maybe its just the inner child in me, but because of all this mystery, I have no bloody idea what this "thing" could be, but I know that I want it.

How much do you want it

And the important question is do you want the thing, or the thing the thing goes with ? cause the thing the thing goes with is a thing of beauty ... the original thing itself is just a clever little thing.

Who's following lol..

Do you want it, Sir? The technology, Sir? Command the unseen forces, Sir? Of nature, Sir? Do you, Sir? Do you want it? A nice thumper? Kenneth, a nice thumper for Sir? Off the peg, is it Sir? Or bespoke? A nice bit of bespoke? The wife need never know, Sir. Or does she like a bit of bespoke too, Sir? Does she, Sir? Does she like it, Sir? Does she look up expectantly when you come in, Sir? Hoping for a bit of bespoke?

The coffee! It's too strong!
