Name of an illusion...

Postby flash_da_magic_man » Jan 3rd, '10, 13:58

I once saw a video of a magician walking along with half of his body separated from the rest. I thought it was an Andrew Mayne idea but I cant see anything on his website.

To explain it a little but further, the legs were walking along and slightly behind the legs was the body but it was all walking along completely upright.

It's really hard to explain it lol

Does any of this make sense to anyone or ring any bells?

Name Of An Illusion

Postby Allen Tipton » Jan 3rd, '10, 15:25

This visual illusion has had various names.

I first came across it in the David Copperfield Special No 16, 'Unexplained Forces'; not shown on TV in the UK.
He does it brilliantly.
The basis can be found in Andrew Mayne's Body Morphin & Bisection m/s.
Also his 'Tricks With the Body' m/s contributed some ideas.
Peter Marvey also experimented with part of the principle with his 'Shrinking Body'

The video suggested above is a very rough performance of the feat.

Thanks Allen, I already do Bi-section by Andrew Mayne.
Is the full illusion available to buy or have people just taken the next step from body morphin' and Bi-section to make a similair effect to the David Copperfield version?

This is actually not a Copperfield original. Copperfield bought it from another man, and I cannot recall that man's name right now. I know that the man creates many illusions, most of which aren't nearly as successful.

Although it appears that Copperfield isn't using that illusion in his show right now, I think he still owns the rights to it.

Memory being correct it was Andrew Mayne that David got the piece from and that version is an exclusive to David and not available commercially. There have been some poorer variations put out in that magicians simply don't know how to accept the words "NO YOU CAN'T HAVE IT".

I believe it is a Steve Fearson effect.

Also, I believe Copperfield calls it the "laser illusion", though I think the laser was his idea as an addition.

STEVE FEARSON!

Yes that is it!

Sorry Craig, but I'm quite positive this is correct.

Perhaps you were thinking of the shrinking illusion.

David does get many of his illusions from Andrew though.

Hi Ben. You are correct, David Copperfield bought the rights to Steve Fearsons '' Pocket Sawing in Half'' in late 94 early 95. He and his team developed it into the ''Laser Illusion'' we see today. The Fearson effect predates the Mayne effect.

This is a Steve Fearson effect bought by Copperfield, now called "Laser Cut Illusion"

Can you name that illusion

And to add:
Dr. Todd came across a 'simplified' version of body separation and mentioned the dealer/inventor's name, about 2 years ago. But i cannot recall it although at the time I did look it up.
In this the performer stood, straight, & POSSIBLY held a jacket in front of himself..(this I cannot remember) then moved either his upper or lower half sideways.

And NO guys I am not thinking of Steve Fearsons' jacket in front of him float.

If Dr. Todd is still around he might give you details.
