Now I am quite new to magic and I have heard the term "mentalism" thrown around quite a bit. I would just like to know what mentalism is?

Telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, precognition or the illusion thereof. There are some diminutives of these four but they are the main components.

What Craig said. Definitely check out the pdf linked in the first post. That should give you a 'pretty good' idea of what mentalism is.

If you find that you'd like to investigate that road further, read it multiple times. And then do it again!
