They started doing burlesque shows here in Ireland and I thought it would be a natural platform for magic and circus acts. Not todays street magic, but classic magic in all the regalia. I e-mailed them but got no response. Perhaps they thought I was some seedy mac-wearer who wanted to hang around with semi-naked women.
While that might be fun, the chief attraction was that it seemed to be a natural setting for a particular form of magic, and I would have loved to recreate an act for them. Particularly along the mentalist/spiritualist lines.

Firstly, Though I'm not particularly into the whole burlesque thing, I do think the original idea of old-style stage magic, if carried off well, would be a good idea.

Secondly - there's a "but", here it is.

There are two kinds of burlesque now. One is basically strippers wearing frilly knickers, nylons and corsets instead of G-strings and clear heels. The other is a recreation of the old style burlesque with other acts, comedy and - of course - a bit of skin.

If your local "burlesque" night is the former, I can't imagine you'd actually WANT to perform there, and I don't really think the kind of crown who attend that sort of night would be all that welcoming either.

If it's of the latter type though, I'd have thought it would fit really quite well. I do think a more fitting performance would be good though. No iPhone trics, for example. Real rabbits would definitely fit the theme if you're into live animal work. I think generally, if you're wearing tails and a cloak with a top hat and performing accordingly - you'll be on the right lines.

I've not been on here for some time (only just got internet again) but was quite amused at my timing when I logged on and saw this thread.

I've been doing a boylesque* magic act, with a little bit of quick change, for some years now. It's amazing how well the two genres go together in the right context.

*Boylesque is a male burleque movement. I an NOT, as one person who saw my card assumed, a Susan Boyle impersonator.
