Magic & Burlesque

Postby Jordan C » Jan 27th, '10, 19:08

For those of you who don't know, there is a craze for scantily clad women all drinking together in one place and getting off on what used to be known as 'Cabaret' Performances!!!

It's called 'BURLESQUE'!!! ;)

I go to a local B night called 'Salon Rouge' and 2 of the regular performers called 'Cherry n Ruby' sometimes do a little routine they call 'Magic'. View HERE (Clicky)

Now they obviously perform something very simple and obvious to the beginner magi but I'm wondering, is there a role for magic within burlesque???

The Burlesque scene offers the opportunity to recreate classics as they were intended to be seen... Right or wrong?

The intention of Burlesque is to retrospect the audience in music and performance and even dress code....

Are we missing a trick???

and before you say it, they perform it badly... but their job is to titilate not be magical!!! What I wonder is can we get extravagant and exuberant again in stage magic under the banner of Burlesque which is not just a UK phenomenon but a worldwide one - basically since the film Moulin Rouge oddly enough!!!

I'm slightly amused by the idea of watching a show like that and thinking about the quality of the magic...

But otherwise, yes indeedy there is a performance space there if wanted... as with most other places if you look for it. I can't help feeling that real people at a burlesque performance might not care all that much though... :)

Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

I think it's great, and the magic world has been very slow to latch on to burlesque. Magic and burlesque go together very well - they share common roots. I believe Lord Freddie (one time inmate here, lately released to another forum) runs nights that combine the two. We should do more of it.

I'm always listening to music and thinking about a quick fire magic routine to them and recently we've heard a lot of Paolo Nutini's Pencil Full of Lead at B nights as it has the swing vibe they look for. I also have - in my mind - an awesome routine to go with that particular track which led me to thinking about how much further magic and burlesque could go together!! :)

You need to chat to Lady of Mystery, I know she was talking to a few people a while back about organising a burlesque magic show.

OK, so what you are really asking is would an audience rather watch semi-naked women dancing in an erotic manner, or a bald man perform tricks with paper cards?

Speak to Lee Smith as he's on eof the hosts at the very frequent DollyRemixture nights in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

There's a surprisingly large magic and comedy scene mixed with the Burlesque scene and their shows always have a featured magician as well as a comedian.

The performing magicians have all been Magic Cirlce members or of that standard and the show that I went to was attended by a good number of magicians and hypnotists as well and we all enjoyed a great chat during the interval.

Highly recommended if you can get down to one of these.

We have a great night, and the magic works very well with the Burlesque theme, we have had some great magicians (inc Talk magics very Dr Todd last month)

The two really do work together well.

Lee.

I did tablehopping at a Burlesque evening last year.

The show had lots of 10 to 15 minutes breaks to allow the audience to fill their glasses and give the performers time to prepare for the next act. I did some tables while the audience were getting settled before the show then was able to do a couple of tables between each act.

Before the show I was a bit apprehensive about the type of audience and was thinking my material might lack the innuendos or bawdyness (if thats a real word?) but it was just like any other gig and nothing special was required.

I guess the point I'm making is that magic does not need a burlesque theme to fit in to a burlesque night. In fact I think magic provides a nice break from all the burlesque performances.

Good point about walkaround.

I was thinking more in terms of on stage act. I'm going to have to get myself a manual on how to build fast change cases and woman in half type boxes etc and do some more research.

I got hold of Lady of Mystery and we're discussing ideas. And I shall take a look at your links Lee when I get back home later!! :)
