Trick missing from Royal Road ?

Postby jim ferguson » Jan 28th, '10, 23:48

Hi all,
My first copy of Royal Road to Card Magic has long gone, and as yet i have not replaced it (shameful i know :) ). However my brother in law bought a copy about 3 years ago, it is the soft backed edition. I borrowed it from him a few weeks ago to refresh my memory on a couple of effects.
Anyway, on page ix of the contents, under platform tricks, the fourth effect is said to be Cards up the Sleeve - it is not there. Instead it is an effect called Egyptian Pocket. Its been so long since ive read it i cant remember if the Cards up the Sleeve was in the copy i had (it was an orange hardbacked edition).
Could anyone shed any light on this, is it just that this is a later edition, or was the trick never in the book ?
Jim :)

I have two copies...a recent purple backed one...and an orange hardbacked copy...*cough* signed *cough* and neither contain cards up the sleeve!

No mine is a 90's edition hardback and it too doesn't contain cards up sleeve. Perhaps it was an older edition and its just been revised, this does tend to happen sometimes.

    Was it a good trick?

I have the 1981 Faber paperback edition and Cards up Sleeve is included, immediately after Egyptian Pocket.

Do you realise you've made me neglect my work now? After seeing this there's no way I can sit here and not go upstairs to grab my copy and see if it's there.
    I hope you're satisfied now.

(10 bonus points for stating the bleedin' obvious for the first person to point out that I clearly wasn't working if I was around to see this thread in the first place... and of course my response to that is: that clearly isn't the point! Haha)

My copy is the "Revised edition" published by Foulsham in 2004. The cover is blue with floating cards.

There's no list of tricks at the front, just techniques and I can't find any mention of the Cards up the Sleeve effect in the index.

That might suggest Matthius88 was correct in suggesting the trick was probably revised out, but not removed from the contents.

Mine is a dusky orange hardbacked "eighth impression", from 1975 I think, so looks like it may have been added then taken away for some reason?

Sorry to revive, but I have the "2000 Indian Reprint Edition" i.e paperback with photo of cards on the front. I don't have cards up the sleeve, but I have card to pocket and the patter is based around the cards going up the sleeves.

But I don't have egyptian pocket!
