i've given the technique that would work for stage...

should i immediately pm you with all the answers to all the things you ask for? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....

what if other people want to predict an animal on stage? why not post up the technique so that anyone who did a search would then find one of the many solutions to this question...

ever heard of the phrase "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime"...

you should learn how to fish...

mentalism is like building a house, first you have to read the blueprints, then you gather together the materials you need, then you put together the structure and strong foundations...

you slowly start building your house brick by brick, until you own it...and add an extension or two as you build upon that strong groundwork and knowledge...

i've mixed metaphors here i know...

you think I'm bullying you, or being mean..I'm not - I'm helping you, you just dont see it as that, cos im not spoon feeding you the instant answer...

everything i've learnt, everything i've achieved, is through studying, trying things out, thinking things through over and over again...and because i learnt the basics first...i have a strong foundation to work from...and I'm always looking to improve on them too...

how do you introduce yourself to your audience?
what is your opener and how do that illustrate who you are, and in what way?
what is your next effect - how does that link from your opener - or doesnt it? if not, why...how do you segue from one piece to the next?
how do you connect with your audience? what do you share? how do you involve them and get them to care about what happens?
where's the involvement and emotional connection?

these are all BIG questions, things that are either important to you, or not...they are just examples by the way...

Iain... stop it.

Everyone else, thanks; your really helping, because initially I was just going to say "any mammel", but now you mention it thats ALOT.

I need to find a subtle way to narrow it down, but also find a suitable pocket index. Are there many on the market and whats the usual price for them? :)

13 steps has an index, make multiple and wear them in your jacket...four of them...

I could do, but I've done something very similar before and I find that:

A. I cannot build them to save my life.
and
B. People can guess there are multiple envelopes.

Thats why Bang On was so good; it stops people thinking that - and if I can't find anything better I'll buy it, but I still want to see what else is out there.

Watch a video of the performance. Its good.

edit:
I am well aware that your constant criticism of every single thing I say would be considered trolling if you did not have such a high post count. Please stop criticizing me for my high standards - mine are different to yours and I am quite happy to let your perform how you will.

This has happened over at the Cafe too, and you are not playing devils advocate; I am - which is somewhat of my duty as the performer.

dont need to - its the same principle involved...if you think people will say "its multiple envelopes", they'll say "its multiple x, y,z"...

They don't because I've seen the wallets, and they are too small to hold 52 cards. It fooled me for the first few times of seeing it; and I'm certain with the right presentation it can be made totally foolproof to an audience (just lay a false trial thats minorly hidden)

so producing a wallet and a card looks cleaner than just one simple envelope? what if they ask to look inside the wallet?

anyway - good luck with the holy grail

I found the Holy Grail ages ago, it was s***.

They cannot ask to see the wallet, because I am alone on stage at this point in the performance. (its a semi-opener)

Hopefully doing this with animals if possible, will make it much harder to figure out.

There's a reason why pulling a prediction from your wallet is better suited to playing cards than it is animals.

Iain's alternative is a great one, much better than using an index which would be fine for close-up, but if you're performing on stage then 1) a tiny prediction is going to have a lesser impact and 2) you are working with an entirely different environment which presents other possible methods.

Iain really isn't being stubborn by starring out the letters, he's hoping that you'll consider various alternatives in light of your performing environment (as well as not spelling it out on a public forum which anybody can read) and come up with the answer yourself - that's how you truly gain understanding, by grappling with a problem as opposed to being spoon-fed the answer and confusing knowledge with understanding.

Have you read Practical Mental Effects? There's a good method in there (may also be in Corinda, I haven't got my copy to hand) which would involve the entire audience. It's an Otis Manning idea...

One of the greatest Mentalists, or at least often Mental performers of the past, Berglas uses what Iain suggested, as well as Derren on many many TV appearances.
You won't use it though Tom, it's not your kind of thing!

Ian The Magic-Ian wrote:I like that idea. Classify them by species and then sub-classify them by alphabetical order.

Sorry, I was gonna say have generic terms on the cards such as "bird" and "insect" to cover all the obscure types of insects and birds etc you can get (So for example "Name an animal","Pigeon","*pulls out card saying 'bird', take a bow*"). I guess it depends on how many cards you want to use and how accurate you want to be

But not knowing how Bang On works, I like that idea you got there Ian :)

What other method would you suggest? (appologize but are we talking about Ian or Iain here?)

Iain suggested one other method, but it was entierly in stars **** and no one knew what it was; or at least me and Beardy didn't.
