I learnt my escapology mostly in fetish clubs, one place where people are happy to tie you up with ropes and chains (they're less happy when you escape, but hey, I like to be challenged!), not necessarily the best route for everyone but it worked for me. I also got friendly with an (off duty) policeman there who introduced me to the workings of handcuffs and standard application techniques, and a friend's Posey straightjacket (with pesky armloops) completed my education.

You can buy loads of gimmicked stuff and basic rope and chain releases, but if you're basically fit and can find someone to tie you up there's no substitute for real practice, save the gimmicks for later as the performance aids they're supposed to be; if you leave yourself reliant on gimmicks you're taking chances if they ever jam or things don't go according to plan.

A good thing to start with is the 100 foot rope escape (aka mummy tie); you'll need a full length of the thickest, best quality rope you can afford or acquire (I got mine for a tenner in the B+Q clearout box, and it doubles as an area marker for street performance), then you just let your audience committee tie you up with it any way they choose. By far the best text I've found on this is in Burling Hulls "33 Rope Ties and Chain Releases". It's only a fiver and a great introduction to the art.

While you're at it, even if you want to avoid the fetish scene it's worth looking up a few bondage safety principles so you don't end up losing a hand; there's plenty on this topic on the web, basically you're best off using nylon rope (not cheap clothesline that'll give you friction burns), if you feel your fingers tingling loosen the tie (safewords!) and NEVER wrap it around your neck under any circumstances (strangulation aside, there's also the matter of the carotid artery which feeds oxygen to the brain, touch that the wrong way and out go the lights).

PM me if you want any more help.

Welcome,

Escapology is a fascinating subject. Its a personal fave in terms of history and tradition but I've never really performed it. If it helps a good place to start are Dover Houdini books. You can get these on amazon.co.uk.

All the best and hope to hear from you on the forum soon,

Fish

All the best,

Woah lock picking. Two items to get you started "Tension Wrench" and "Pick". Get a starter set from various online dealers, fairly cheap. Do not buy a "Pick Gun", May sound cool, but can be slightly faulty.

Um start a thread about this on the main forum, if you want to discuss this further. (misc. forum please.)

Thanks.

personaly i prefer to bypass the locking mech completely, wizard or shim the lock rather than pure picking.
i also have used gimmick x's and the like for cuff and shackle escapes in the past but prefered a quick release articale for saftey when performing in my youth, just as well once nearly drowned forever shy man.

I'm interested in the sas method for handcuff escape if any one can point me in the right direction 8)

I have, with drastic outcomes, the lock was attached to the fizzy drinks cupboard in the school kitchen, and the paperclip i was using snapped
