Isn't anyone else annoyed???

Postby SamGurney » Feb 11th, '10, 04:20

I'm annoyed that as on the internet there are loads of crappy websites which promice to transorm the reader into a genius mind reader like derren brown in 2 minutes with no effort, no skill, no brain and the offer conveniently is running out tommorow so you better hurry to become the best mind reader in the world over night and buy my 2 page e-book for.. nope not £8475.98 as it was before, but I am giving YOU, yes YOU a HUGE reduction to £250!
Then, from reading through the effects, it exposes Derren Brown's lift, Banachek's PK touches, the ID principle.. It suckers people in with rediculous claims so the billions of people who are curious about TV magic and mentalism are forced into buying a booklet which exposes some decent magic (amongst some quite bad magic also... but STILL!).
Is this illegal and can't the author's of the various effects sue??

In a word, NO.

First of all, it is not illegal; it's called "puffery" and is expected in advertising.

Second, you can't save people from their own stupidity. We live in relatively free countries and people are free to be as stupid as they wish. In other words, you can't legislate them from piddling away huge chunks of their cash on rubbish!

cheers,

I think what Sam Gurney want to ask is if it's not illegal to write about other people effects and expose them in your book? Isn't that plagiarism? Or something like that?

Its a bit irritating.. but I really dont think its making a big difference. People arnt going to pay £250 for "Derren's Secrets".. most people are smarter than that. The odd wanabe mentalist might but I dont see them as too much of a threat. And they perhaps arnt the type that will expose you during a performance. I perfom using the ID most nights in one form or another, and that little gem is exposed all over youtube. In fact alot of my routines methods are exposed on the net. I like to think I'm a good enough performer to get past that.. People are still amazed night after night.. i keep getting paid.. and thus the cirlce of life is complete.

Let the swindelers earn a quick bob or two scamming people who cant be bothered to do the work. They will never be a genuine threat, we perhaps just have to put up with them as a constant irritation.

Yes, but you'd have to have more money than brains to fall for it.

is it "exposure" if the recipient pays for it?

surely, that's the business?

My opinion: if you're performing to some p**ck who's looked up a load of "secret methods" on the internet, you're already onto a losing battle. Perform for people who are willing to suspend their disbelief, leave the ones who are out to spoil everyone's fun well alone.

I think its kind of the point of the advertising to hype up the product, make it seem like the one and only thing you will ever need.

Especially if its something expensive, because you know.... they need to sell it! I'd much rather someone paid such an ammount for the methods instead of getting them via some less-than-legal method.

Im not sure if I have understood this post right, I just woke up.

Exposure happens, it's a fact of life and to be perfectly honest isn't something that I'd ever had cause me any great problems. If someone's stupid enough to waste their money on that sort of rubbish then more fool them.

Well firstly I get the feeling that Sam was one of the unfortunate people to pay this £250 for these.

For aslong as I have been interested in magic, there has been people out there trying to be clever and ruin the illusion for people. In my honest opinion even those who enjoy magic for exactly what it is know that the magician isn't really some sort of magic being hence the reason its called a trick. Although the real magic is in the reaction they get when you suspend their belief, because for that few minutes you are magic.

I don't worry about people revealing things on youtube, or on tv programs strictly because there will always be an audience for magic as there will always be people who want to be entertained and want to witness the impossible by any means necessary.

** I find the people on youtube doing magic reveals to be like a man standing outside santa's grotto telling kids he doesn't exist, people know its true but still choose to believe in it**
