clay cups and magnets

Postby magiccmb » Feb 18th, '10, 00:44

ive had a brainwave but im intrested in feedback.
for starters ive copyrighted the idea incase it is a first in magic the chop cup but made in clay like a roman age antique style. also where do you get small magnets if you know chop cups youll know why and can you buy spare balls for chop cups both normal and the special balls if you know chop cups you should understand.
so any ideas does it exsist is it something anyone would buy or what?

Firstly, you can't copyright an idea in that it's a concept. You could Patent the physical end result of that concept but the best you can do to protect a concept (at least reserve your contribution as it were) is to publish it via a recognized source outside your personal control.

Secondly, IT'S BEEN DONE!

I do believe Stevens Magic here in the States still offers a limited edition set of this sort.

When it comes to Chop Cups you'd be surprised how many variations exists

HOWEVER, if you would like to dig a bit deeper on this idea to either refine what you've come up with or at least see the history of such, I'd suggest you look up Bill Palmer, I believe he's still part of the team at the green place (Magic Cafe).

Like I said, look up Bill Palmer he's probably one of the leading experts on the Cups & Balls and their kindred Chop Cup.

personaly, I wouldnt buy a clay chop cup because you sometimes have to bang the thing down to get it to work. Clay, ( Particually cheap clay) might shatter. What i would sugest though, is to make a cup that looks like clay, but it is in fact made from a resin . It would be lighter, and much more robust.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Seems strange that you've patented an idea yet you don't know where to buy the materials that form part of the prop.

As said by Dale, clay would be far too fragile for regular use and I could see it cracking quite easily.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Actually, there are/have been several clay cups on the market. They are not fragile if you know how to work them. Nielsen even put out a nice little porcelain rice bowl. The better ones are designed so that you do not have to bang them at all. There are also coffee cups, et al.

I forgot about the coffee cup and believe I actually had one at one point in time... never used it though :? Probably one of those things of "that would be cool to have in the house so I can do an improv routine using the same cup someone was drinking from" sort of impulses...

 ... the joys of youth

Dale is right on the "slamming" the cup down point... I can just see the thing cracking or worse, in the middle of your bit.

I also love that one little point about the Patenting issue that was brought up
