Good place to buy a card guard?

Postby bombbob » Mar 11th, '10, 22:32

Hey.

Sorry for posting so many threads asking where to buy things. My knowledge of magic shops is very limited...

Anyhow. Anybody got any suggestions where to buy the Stainless Steel Custom Card Clip from Ellusionist, in Britain? I've found one on Ebay for £15.50. Is that about as cheap as they go in Britain?

Also, anybody had any experience with this clip? Is it any good?

Thanks.

Rob.

The link above seems to have added the comma to the end, so it breaks i've typed it again.

I also recommend this store

Ebay is a goldmine, for the sellers ;-), although I've found some reasonable bargains on there, it's often more expensive, and postage can add a lot to the price.

If you want a good card clip, get Porper Clip.
It's my BEST investment in magic.

My personal preference is for unmarked items - I don't like to have names on things - it looks too much like a 'trick' deck if a spec sees it. The guard Mandrake recommended is very high quality - it's made from brushed stainless steel, and I've never had any problems with it. When I got mine, I just gently rubbed down the inside edges with some wet&dry paper, as they were a tiny bit sharp, but other than that it works very well, and for the price, it's perfect

card gaurd

Postby Jason Ladanye » Mar 30th, '10, 02:32

I just bought the ellusionist one and sent it back the same day! i looks great but doesn't do it's job. I want a card clip to flatten the cards first, then look cool second:)

I got my first 4-5 clips from Hank Lee's Magic Factory. What I've noticed is so just work better than others due to the inconsistencies in the clips and even the decks themselves. So, it's kinda hard to get the right fit.

The last order of bulk cards i bought (120 decks) felt like each deck had 49 cards each... so none of my clips are really doing the job.

-I use them on a deck i might be practicing a second deal with only. I need super flat cards for the deal to work, so i reserve one deck for working on just that sleight. Those cards need a flat home :)

I don't understand them either, I always wondered why anyone would bother.

As to practicing the second deal or anything else I would imagine that one would want to practice using a normal deck.

surely you'd practice with normal cards too though? otherwise, you'd only be able to second-deal when the deck is right?

Dales's right about the point of a card clip but if you're going to get one then I agree with GaMer. The Porper clip is about the best out there in my opinion.

I've had the same one now for around five years and use it if I don;t have a jacket and have a deck in my jeans/trousers.

I travel all the time (literally - I don't have a carbon footprint, more like a crater) and having a card guard does stop horrible things happening to a pack when they have to suffer being thrown into my bag with all the other junk. I find it convenient more than anything, and I also like that the cards do stay flat so it's much easier to practice. (another advantage of travel is a lot of time being bored in hotel rooms - great for practicing card manipulation)
