The funniest thing I've seen in ages - and it's on MTV!

Postby pcwells » Mar 17th, '10, 20:09

I got back from my long drive home on Sunday, and Mrs Pete forced me to sit down to watch MTV.

I hate MTV. It's like watching someone remorselessly flipping channels, but there it was.

Why the fudge was I watching this chronic wallpaper pap?

And then it came on - just after 10pm - the video my better half had been waiting for.

The new Lady GaGa video - Telephone.

If you haven't seen it, I thoroughly recommend it.

I won't post a YouTube link, cos it's a million miles away from being work-friendly. It is, however, the most utterly absurd thing I've seen in a very long time. I won't even start to describe it - aside from the fact that it's done very much in the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse style..

Utterly outrageous.

Loved it!

Pete

Lady gaga has been doing that for most of her career. She realizes she has a medium amount of talent, so in order to cope with that she was told just be has balls to walls crazy has possible to get the most attention she can.

It's sort of working, but really it will wear out and people will get tired of seeing her.

though the music isnt my cup of tea...i'll give her this - at least she's doing what she wants, and is generally a little bit different as far as being popular goes...

i mean, she's hardly the new Bowie or anything, but at least she's different from the majority of blonde female singers that get churned out by the machine...

song's a load of bobbins mind you...

What I love about the whole thing is that it makes absolutely no effort to be sexy - unlike almost all the other female solo artists you see on MTV. Lada GaGa is just absurd. And it works well for her.

I agree that the song is far from being a classic, but I got the impression from her CD that the label didn't know quite who to sell her to, so they got her to include just about every type of pop muzak from teenybop pap to almost industrial electonica. The latest video seems to indicate that they've decided to push her to a more grown-up audience. You definitely can't go back to kids' TV after that one, so the next album might be more consistently interesting.

And Randy - you make it sound like being crazy is easy. :)

Ooh look at me getting all serious about pop music!

I love watching the occasional cheesefest pop (my eclectic music collection proves this), but that just wasted my time. I mean, did I have to see the start of the prison scene? Was the diner stuff needed? Why is Beyonce there at all?

I'm returning to Scooch...

No one. It's really redefining the interface between pop music and soft porn, though...

I think Beyonce is in there for the same reason that a lot of singles have featured artists these days: to cross pollinate sales between fans of both artists. If a single by X features artiste Y and you're a fan of Y, then maybe the theory is that you'll like X because Y likes X. Cynical, isn't it.

And, to be honest, I think the vast majority of today's 'R&B'/soul/urban/dance music videos could be labelled 'porn for cowards'. Most of MTV's output seems to be softcore titilation these days.

I wouldn't care, but it would be nice if music channels had some kind of 'watershed' policy.

Ooh listen to me getting all prudish!
