If anybody has this or knows the method a review would be really helpful. What I really want to know is, is it workable i.e. can it be used practically almost impromptu?

I'm not sure about which method you are refering to, i think i saw a method which used a gimmick but to be honest it can be acheived with simple slight of hand. If you want to know more PM me.
There are a few methods in "now you see it now you dont" by bill tarr along with loads of other slights. a nice book i'd reccomend it!

I'm aware of the sleight of hand version but I was wondering what's the difference.

I'd have to agree with jugglemonkey here - it's a lot better to use the sleight of hand, and you may want to buy a fake cigarette that looks like it's red hot the whole time.
Also, I've owned lessons of sleight of hand for years and I also recommend it - you can always come back to it when you improve and the illustrations are well done as well
