I didn't know what to expect from zombieland as the trailers were misleading as to how funny the movie would be. I watched it and loved it; great movie.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I loved the way they introduced Bill Murray to the film - shot from behind with a big fake wig on. I was convinced that it wasn't him, and they'd shoot his head off before anyone got a good look. :D

Restless Natives!!

Now there's a film from my past - I was trawling through some of my music at the weekend and came across some of my old Big Country 12" singles. Put me in mind of the soundtrack they did for a small Scottish movie in the 80's abut two young lads who start holding up tourist buses around the Highlands dressed as a clown and a wolfman (and promptly become tourist attractions themselves...)

Needless to say the music is brilliant (Stuart Adamson is sorely missed) but it's a terrifically charming film that can be watched over and over again.

Slightly worried not to see that Alien only got a minor mention in this thread!

Have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? Its not sci-fi, but its a fantastic adult fairy tale, and one of the most overlooked art-house films of the last decade.

hmmm...i wouldnt have called Pan's an art-house film myself, though it is a work of art...and a beautiful film...

if anyone could make the Elric books work on film, Del Toro could...

may watch hellboy2 later...

And I definitely wouldn't have said Pan's Labrynth was overlooked. As I recall it was widely raved about - and very rightly so.

Del Toro's previous spook-fest, The Devil's Backbone was confined to niche market cult status, though. And I thought it was gobsmackingly awesomely fab and whatever other platitudes you want to add for good measure. One of the best haunted house movies I've seen in ages.

I thought Pans Labyrinth was over hyped and lacking. It got more than enough word of mouth hype. Enough to raise my expectations beyond what I saw.

It was an ok film and the effects were suitably creepy and twisted to make it interesting and unique. I was left wondering where the rest of the story was. Definitely a piece of art though.

I think one of the best recent films (ok... 2008) is Defiance with Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber. It is world war II story about 2 Jewish brothers who help form a isolated village of escapees from the Germans and all the problems that come about because of it. Due to lack of food and supplies, they train up a group to make hits on Nazi run stations and buildings. It's gripping stuff and a damn good story.

If you are looking for a mindless laugh out loud movie, I suggest 2012. It is the most over the top apocalypse film ever. It had me in hysterics watching the absolutely far fetched escapes through amazing cgi scenes of utter carnage. It is purely an effect movie but it will make you laugh!

Oh, and I know it's been talked about elsewhere, but the Del Toro-produced ghostie flick, The Orphanage was absolutely masterful in its storytelling, style and suspense.

It's by far and away one of the best horror movies of the last decade.

And I never want to watch it again.

Ever.

Oooh.. and if you want gut-wrenching, edge of your seat you've-got-to-be-kidding-ness from an obscure low-budget flick that's got lost and gathered dust in obscurityland, you can't do much better than Miracle Mile.

And that's all I'm going to say about it.

The less you know about the movie before you sit down to watch it, the more you'll appreciate it.

Catch it if you can.

Everyone should watch The Holy Mountain - Jodorowsky, even if you hate it, you'll still like it in some ways...brilliant, surreal and funny in places...great piece of theatre...

i felt the Orphanage a little lacking for a horror - but for a story/fable - very good...

devil's backbone - not got a bad word to say about it - a superb film...

I watched The Shout the other month, late 70s brit-psycho horror type film...quite interesting, john hurt, alan bates and tim curry amongst others...interesting plot...

I'm afraid i will have to disagree Dave, Pan's story is one of the most compelling in adult fantasy.

The Orphanage is a brilliant film two.

I could argue my points on them both but seeing as I'm a film student my argument would be rather biased, considering the perspective i have been taught to have on such styles.

If nobody has seen Steve McQueen's 'Hunger' yet, i highly recommend it, not for the faint hearted though. Its about the hunger strikes in the Irish Maze Prison, and is so beautifully shot and written that it left me awe-inspired.
