Postby jhmagic1 » Apr 11th, '10, 15:48

I have a Jimi Hendrix record with the wrong label on one side

It has a 'Top Of The Pops' label on.

Anyone know if its worth anything?

I have tried the record collectors guild but no one knows anything.

couldnt see the photo...

however, are you sure the hendrix album is an original and not a re-pressing/re-issue? what year is the top of the pops label?

have you got the cover? you can check in Record Collector that the album is an original one...

and it would be a label mispressing, rather than the album being mispressed itself...

why didnt Record Collector not give you any clues i wonder...

You're probably not old enough to remember this Iain  but in the late 70's there were a number of record labels for singles that re-pressed popular records and re-dold them.

Labels such as Solid Gold which I recall being one of the popular ones and there were a few that re-labelled discs for juke boxes.

Top of the Pops may be one of these.

If it's a single rather than an LP (you didn;t specify) and it has the middle punched out then this may well be one of those and if so then it's probably worthless.

i used to work in a second hand record shop, and deal in records privately myself...i used to study Record Collector like i study 13 steps...

its why i was asking about the years - there were some very early top of the pops compilations...but that would have been probably the year Hendrix died...so its bound to be a re-issue of some kind...

if both sides play different albums, the value will go up.but that in itself is rare...a label mispressing would be worth "something", but as the album would be a reissue - probably not very much...

and it would be worth seeing if the label itself was just glued over the original (it would have be to Track or Polydor)...

and if its 1970/71, then the last proper release of Hendrix would have been with The Band of Gypsies (compilations not withstanding)...which was on Track (i even have the original withdrawn cover)....

the magazine Record Collector should give you a hint...

Both sides play Jimi Hendrix Records. 'The Wild one' album SHM791

Its an LP - Hallmark records

The 'Top of the pops-volume 29' label is on side 1
The date on the Top of the pops side is 1973

The Jimi Hendrix 'The Wild one' label is on side 2
The date on side 2 is 1972 PPX Enterprises

this one? yeah, thats a kinda reissue...Hallmark used to do a lot of those, The Kinks, Donovan, they were like a cheap but good value record label...can't remember who owned them...

well, if its just a label mispressing...

http://eil.com/shop/PrinterFriendly.asp ... mi-Hendrix

sixteen quid if it was mint and normal...maybe twenty five with the label thing...but you could just ring up a record-shop and ask...

Thanks for the info Iain,

So did Hallmark make alot of mistakes with there re-issue labels, surely this record is now unique?

well, back then, things like this happened...but, just cos its unique, it doesnt mean its worth much...

if it were on a different label, a proper album of studio stuff (rather than some tapes found of him with Curtis messing about) - and the TOTP label was seen with higher regard...its pretty much down as a novelty mishap...

now, if you had The Bread and Beer Band's only album, that would be worth fortunes, any white labels of hendrix's stuff, or...well...it'll take too long to explain what is and what isnt worth money really..so lets not bother...

and, please get it verified elsewhere...i doubt, realistically you'd get anymore than a tenner for it...
