David Blane: Mysterious Stranger

Postby KODs_righteye » Jun 21st, '04, 07:14

I know there have been a bunch of discussions on David Blane here at talk magic, and this is about something nobody has brought up yet. His book, David Blane Mysterious Stranger. I've been reading it for the last few days, and it's very interesting. But even more interesting is the "challange" attached to his book. It basically states that he has hidden clues throughout the book, and when deciphered, will lead you to a golden orb worth $100,000.00.

Now, the puzzle has already been solved, but I bring this up because I want to know if anyone has either read the book, or attepted to solve the puzzle.

I'm including a link to the page that explains the challange, the solution, and tells about the women who solved the it. Looking at the solution I can tell you I never would have been able to go as far as this women did. Only when I started noticing some of the clues, did I find the site with the solution.

I also want to hear what you all think about David's clever "challange." If you ever get a chance to get your hands on a copy of this book, I definitly recomend reading it.

May I be the first to admit that I really don't understand the answer? OK with $100k at stake it had to be a good one but I got a headache just reading it, never mind trying to follow and understand it. Thanks for the link anyway!

On the same kind of theme - if anyone's into these kind of treasure hunts and puzzles - there are clubs etc that set this kind of thing - I was invited to one in May and the theme to the treasure hunt was court Jesters - I dressed as a court Jester and did a bit of table hopping before, during and after the event. I had a right laugh!

Their homepage: The Armchair Treasure Hunt Club

They've not updated their website yet to include the May event. But my picture will be on there when they do! Woohoo!

Yeah I read it and enjoyed it but completely ignored the challenge.

To be honest I feel the whole challenge thing was just another Blaine publicity stunt. I dont see him as a magician, just a travelling entertainer with a pack of cards.

I'd have to disagree. It's unfair to say that David Blaine isn't a magician because he's obviously spent a lot of time practising the effects he performs it's just that he has gone a bit over the top on this whole exhibitionism thing and that's what makes him, in my opinion, unlikeable.

However, to say that he isn't a magician would be wrong because he blatently is, and he is also a very skilled one at that.

yea he is skilled....and rightly so he desirves the credit he gets. He has had a tough life (if you have read his book) and the guy has done well considering. All magicians are skilled in one way or form or we would not be magicians! But I still think he tries to hard.....if u know what i mean......ne way I hope to see his next stunt.......lol

Precisely, why I don't really like him at the moment. But I wanted to make it clear that I do respect him as a magician. So many have slagged David Blaine off, particularly in the magic fraternity, but I wonder how many of those who have had a go at him were awe struck and inspired when the saw his first Street Magic special go out? Have you not noticed there has been a boom in the magic industry within the last few years, particularly the close up/"street magic" side of the industry. Heck, some internet shops now even have Street Magic sections to their websites. I would argue that this has alot to do with our friend David.

N.B. I know my signature is taking the mickey out of him but that's more to do with the fact that he seriously misjudged his little trip to the UK compared to the US. It's more of a statement about the difference in cultures than anything else.

He certainly is going to have the record for one of the most discussed magicians of all times..
Actually - street magic blew me away the first time I saw it. Just don't tell anyone

I read it, I enjoyed it and found it entertaining. I did, however, think that the use of the picture of him standing with the World Trade Centre Towers burning behind him was sick and un-called for. But, as we all know, he can be controvercial (I bet I spelt that wrong) at times!!!

I'm stumped

If it's because I said I was blown away by 'Street Magic' let me explain - I was relatively new to magic when i saw it first, and I didn't know then that magicians aren't supposed to like David Blaine
