Coin sh+++ [ pick up move question

Postby Figaro » Apr 20th, '10, 02:06

Hi all,

I was working on a shadow coins(chink a chink) effect by using a [ (sh+++)

now there is this move I often saw in other videos, but never seen explained.

Its basically where u have the sh+++ on top of the coin and in the act of covering the coin u lift it up between your fingers and slide it forwards.

it seems really logical and easy if u watch it on video, but while trying it out its actually pretty difficult to execute.

Am I gripping it wrong? where could I find basic instructions for this sleight?

It seems to me that I cant put enough pressure on the sh+++ to lift it up, it keeps dropping or making sounds. its also really hard to clip, especially on hard surfaces. I can barely do it on a think mat which u can push in.

Any suggestions? thanks a lot!

I stopped using the object in question in chink a chink for your exact reasons. I can suggest that you try not to carry the gimmick all the way across the surface. I played with just lifting it off its (hmm, other half) and sliding it the rest of the way. Even then it is hard to slide.

The other and more obvious approach is to get the gimmick off but slide over the non gimmick.

A really easy way is a pk ring and a shimmed gimmick.

Remember magic is hard to do, especially in front of people!

Do you have nails? If so, press them under the "real half" (!) and it shouldn't fall out.

Nails? I do have nails? but not on that side of my fingers lol.

What do u mean?

U have to grip it between the first and fourth finger am I right? like a finger palm position but without the fingers curled?

Im not sure if nails have anything to do with it? Or am I wrong?

bmat, yes the sliding is also hard, even with a special close up mat.

but Im still practicing, I think its just one of those moves u have to do and do it quickly. because of the unnaturalcurve of the hand.

anyway does anyone else know some resources where this move is explained?

Thanks a lot!

Moist fingers...

Postby MooncalfMagic » Apr 28th, '10, 17:54

Even if you don't like them, the natural moisture in your hand, if you press down, and pull up suddenly, the walnut shell should stick to your fingers for a half second or so.

Or better still - check out David Roth's Chink a Chink. Very strong effect, pretty easy to do. No gimmick to worry about.

I think it's like many things in magic, in that It's just a nack that you get eventualy.

However...maybe the shells not expanded enough ?

or...you could possibly apply a tiny bit of stickyness to the finger tips.
just touch a piece of sellotape a couple of times.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood your post, I thought you meant picking it up at the tips of the fingers
