The Talk Magic Erection!

I mean election!

So, it can be anonymous, but it would be interesting to see what the general consensus from TM is for the three main candidates :)

either way, the *ahem.. 'democratic' system of counting constituencies rather than our actually democratic vote would still labour in power

When people say things like that, my mental model of them unaccountably drops 40 IQ points. :?

How about when I say "I'm not voting because politics doesn't affect me"?

It drops 60 points and I realise their pet dog is more clued up than they are - even though he drinks from the toilet.

She doesn't drink from the toilet, she's not allowed upstairs.

I could liken this to driving a car. Before I could drive I got buses and taxi everywhere and I was happy, I never once though "you know what, I wish I could drive". But now that I can drive I think "I'm not getting back on that bus with those peasants! and have you seen the price of petrol?"
Those that take no part in politics can sit back and be happy in their ignorance as they will barely notice anything different when there is a change in government. Those that take a more active roll in politics cannot comprehend the short sightedness of these people.

Ignorance is bliss

Well, only up until the time when your car's suspension is damaged by a pot hole because the council you couldn't see the point in voting against has made a mess of its budget.

When you wilfully disenfranchise yourself, you stop having any say whatsoever in who is employed to run the country on your behalf. If you were a businessman, would you let a recruitment consultant dictate who works in your company? No, of course not. So why do people wilfully not want a say in who is employed on their behalf to run something as important to them the country itself?

I have great interest in the whole thing, but am not allowed to vote, as a non-Commonwealth foreign national. Pretty cheesed off about it too, since I've been resident in the UK and paying (exorbitant) taxes for over 20 years.

I like the Australian system, where voting is mandatory. If you don't like any of the candidates you can just scrawl rude words across the ballot paper, but you've got to turn up at least.

"Hi, Robbie!" "May your mischief be spread." --Derren Brown

I like the Aussie system too - it absolutely should be mandatory.

Saying politics doesn't affect you is a bit like saying that you're not affected by weather - you can't help being affected by it. At least with politics you have some tiny chance of making a difference to your life...

It might be difficult to determine how country-level politics affect you but, at a local level, the impact should be more obvious.... and, let's face it, the way our electoral system works, it's your local candidate you will be voting for. You won't see Gordon Brown, David Cameron or Nick Clegg on your ballot papers - unless you live in their respective constituencies.

I remember a quote from the liner notes of a Steve Earle album in the 1980's, 'Copperhead Road', I think I shall adopt it as my signature for the next couple of weeks....

"If you don't vote, don't bitch"

I know the difference between tempting and choosing my fate
