False flicking of a coin

Postby SamGurney » May 1st, '10, 23:14

Hello,
I am touching up on my coin magic and as far as I know there is no such slight in bobo, although I may be incorrect (?). The concept is one I saw, unfortunatley, on the television several years ago in which a coin is suposedly tossed but it is only spun and 'wobbled' so it appears to be spinning in the air where as in fact it is actually remaining the same throughout- which enables the 'flicker' to control wheather he/she would like a heads or a teals. Hmm.. I can't think what reason you'd want to be able to so that for though?? *shifty eyes*
Is this a slight and if so, where can I find information on it, thank you.

I don't think I've seen that. But there is quite a bit of info out there on flipping a coin so it comes down the way you want it. I can't explain it sorry. And I'm really not sure where to find it. I'm pretty sure it has been discussed here before.

But for the exact move you are talking about. I've never seen it, sorry.

Tommy Wonder teaches this sleight to show both sides of a color changing pocket knife in "Toss and Turn," Books of Wonder Volume II, page 59. He says it comes from an old fraudulent coin technique- is this what you're looking for?

Thinking on this, wouldn't it be better to actually toss the coin and then do any sleight when you come to show it? You could put a burr into one of the sides so you know which way it's facing when you catch it and then either open your hand to show the coin or put it on the back of the opposite hand, turning it over in the process and show it.

I saw that show, the real hustle. I don't know why, but I was thinking about it recently, and trying it out, but I never managed it

Thanks everyone-

Thanks Serendipity :D

Imagine- that sounds like a sort of paddle move, would I be wrong in interepreting that?

DirtyDavey- I was thinking along those lines, but I think that's what people expect. Perhaps by combining the methods I have a quite inpenetrable deception in my hands :D

Spooneythegoon- Yes! The real Hustle, scince getting into magic I have never been able to look at Paul Wilson the same way again- that dodgy American accent he used to have sticks with me

Or if you want to be able to repeat, you could turn the coin over in the hand as you near the back of the other hand.

Dan and Dave teach a fake coin toss in their PDF thing, Organic.

It's fairly easy to do.

Thats the method I use, with a bit of practice you can feel which side the coin has landed on by whether its rough or smooth.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

If you have a snag in the coin you might be able to tell which way the coin has landed from sound if it's flicked onto a hard surface.

The Wonder move is done in the action of tossing the knife (as you would a coin,) and so is pretty different from your standard paddle move.

Aaaand after a brief bit of searching, I've found
http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=1607

And so we trace the move to Tony Miller, via the ad.

There is also a video from Jay Noblezada. It's called "Controlled Coin Flip" and you can find it as an instant download at Penguin Magic...

It taught me everything I needed to know.
