What coins does R. Paul Wilson use in Crowded Coins?

Postby Wishmaster » May 28th, '10, 16:33

Hello,

I've seen a clip of R. Paul Wilson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBm2fjYCMGA) performing a coin effect from the Knock em Dead DVD (on my CUPS list now!). Can anyone tell me what these coins are please? I think they must be American something or other, but it's not clear enough to tell on the vid.

Am I right in thinking the larger coins are easier to learn with? The UK £2 coin seems way too thick for p***ing though.

Cheers,
Wishmaster

At the time Paul used Half Crowns, and I'm pretty sure that's what he had for the video.

Take care, Ian

Edit: just watched the clip - they look too big for Half Crowns. Prolly silver dollars.

You can get some dodgy fake Morgan Dollars on eBay from China, much cheaper than any magic shop 8)

Yeah, I nearly fell of my chair when I saw a UK magic shop selling Morgan dollars for £80 and up  So much for buying a few to practise with hehe! Maybe Mr Wilson can afford to be so extravagent. I know that my missus would find all sorts of ways to punish me if I bought anything like that 8)

I've been looking on magicbox at their half dollars for just under a couple of quid. That's more like the sort of prices I was thinking of. Never thought of ebay though :D

Half dollars are perfect for close up and the shells are 30 odd quid. Anything silver dollar related is silly money.
However as I mentioned, China/Hong Kong sell these fake versions that are supposed to have a "Fake" or "replica" engraving or stamp, but they never do. Worth it for the practice, see if you like the size of them compared to the half dollars and make a choice.

Saying that, I wouldn't be too confident that the replicas from Asia are made of anything legal/un poisonous.

I'll try the half dollars first and will have a gander on ebay for the fake ones. I remember that scare last year with lead in kids toys from China. Goodness knows what rubbish the coins contain. Probably summat radioactive :D

Does it matter if the coins look like replicas or what not? I've always believed that with coin magic most people will just look at them and go "The coins went from here to there." rather than "Those 1987 Replica Morgan/Silver dollars went from this hand to that hand. This man is a fraud!!"

Not in the slightest, I was referring to it as a good thing.

By the way, Lidl were recently selling some sandals (from china) and they gave nasty burns on contact. So I think that any fake Chinese coins should be handled with care.

On a side note, where do people get their half dollars from?
I have only found them on ebay selling roughly at £2.50 each. (Uncirculated). I was wondering if there was any better places to buy them.

There usually a pound odd from magic shops. I sent wishmaster four in the post as I rarely ever use them.
