Perhaps this is why our Mentalists are keeping a low profile (courtesy of www.magicweek.co.uk):
TV mindreader let off jury duty - because court officials feared he may wreck trial. "Drew McAdam's act includes reading thoughts, duplicating drawings done in secret and bending cutlery Uri Geller-style. He turned up at court after being called to sit on a case. But the 54-yearold was sent home after officials recognised him as the human lie detector on Five's Trisha chat show..." Read the full story by Alan Carson in the Daily Record

I wouldn't believe all you read in the papers. McAdam probably planted that story himself. He is a journalist for his day job. I have observed in fact that as a mentalist he makes a very good journalist.

I never understand why spelling mistakes are so common in magic/mentalism books.

I reckon it's something to do with the fact that they aren't released to the general public in the same way that a book on another subject might be so they aren't subject to as much scrutiny under proof reading.

Also, there seems to be an oddly high number of dyslexic magicians :D

I've come to the conclusion that magicians (as a rule) just can't spell. Or punctuate. Or, often, express themselves in standard English. (And I'm not talking about those for whom English is a second language.)

I'm thinking seriously of extending my proofreading services to the magic fraternity.

As discussed previously though there is a big difference between a great thinker and a great performer. I have seen both Luke Jermay and Criss Angel live and although from a magician/mentalist view point there were many really nice touches to his show, from a spectators point of view it lacked the presence of Angels.

I seem to remember Nyman was originally the choice for Channel Fours "mind guy" but he did not feel it was right for him (or something similar, I forget) and Derren was born.

Some great thinkers make awful presenters, some lucky gits like Banachek are fortunate to be both.

So far as British magicians go (as in those that present rather than create/work behind the scenes) I immediately think of Paul Daniels, Paul Zenon, Wayne Dobson, Derren Brown, Luke Jermay and Stephen Mulhern.

My wife would be able to name Paul Daniels and would be undecided as to whether Derren Brown is a magician.

And Dynamo. He's been a very big success - he's a talented performer

Until I read this...I'd always assumed Luke Jermay was American...

What I find most interesting about Luke is his age. I was startled when I found out he was younger than me.

Luke Jermay is working in America rather than actually being an American. Or at least he is working there until one of his many creditors in the UK reports him to the US immigration authorities for working illegally which he no doubt is.

Not that I wish to put evil ideas into anybody's mind of course. I suppose the chap has to earn a living before he can pay anybody back.

I just remembered- was Banachek English? I think he may have been born here, something about south africa (or am I thinking of Richard Dawkins) and then he lived in America- hence the confusing accent.

Btw, What did Jermay do to get in debt??

Let me put it this way. I wouldn't be in a hurry to order merchandise from him. Money being owed all over the place and even court orders taken out against him. He had to skip the country to avoid payment. Very commendable and in fact a method I have used myself with great frequency.

There does seem to be a ton of disgruntled and angry magicians who want to lynch him from the rooftops. I enjoy the same experience but at least I don't owe them any money.
