Paul Daniels master class

Postby just me » Jun 8th, '10, 21:51

I'm not sure this is the right place to post but anyway, I was just wanting to say a little something about my recent experiences at the 30th New Zealand magic convention. I may as well stick to the title so first of all, The master class. It was basically a 6 hour day talking and listening to Paul Daniels.
Now, This was my first convention and I've never had much of a chance to see professional magicians perform outside of club, let alone someone as brilliant as Paul so this was pretty awesome for me!

I got to the master class a bit early as did several others hoping to get good seats and all that jazz so it was a very pleasant surprise when Paul Daniels spent close to an hour just talking to ANYBODY who wanted to and showing footage of his shows on his laptop.

when The masterclass started, he spent 15 minutes on the advantage of books and general tips about getting ideas for tricks, routines and the like.
Throughout the class, I took roughly 15 pages of notes and tons of good ideas for trick, I can make, how to get audience attention and more. During the lunch break, he was almost constantly involved in helping people out with the things he taught and thing that people wanted to learn. He was also signing autographs and taking pictures (I can now proudly say I am in possession of a Paul Daniels signed chop cup!)

I've probably written enough now, without even getting on to the live show or the conversations he had with all us 'young guys' but I can say it was a truly great experience and I can't wait till the next convention!

That sounds fantastic!!! I've seen Paul Daniels lecture at a convention for about an hour or so.... so I can only wonder in awe what a whole day would be like!

lovely write up. You must make sure you send your thoughts to Alan Watson for the news letter. :)

I am dead jealous of you guys at that convention you know.I mean, Whit Hayden,Paul Romhanay, Paul Daniels, and John Carney on the same bill?

4 of my absolute favorite people.. let alone favorite magicians. :)

Mind you... Paul D lives just down the road from me. :)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Yeah, I made sure to thank Alan Watson and all the others who organized it (much of it was organized by only two people) It really was the highlight of my year, if not my life :D

I have only met Paul twice, once at a convention, and once after a show. At the convention he sat on the floor in the lobby of the hotel and spoke to everyone, offering the most insightful advice. After his show he spent three hours with myself and three other magicians, and I probably learnt more about stage craft during those three hours than in the previous three years.
He was a lovely, generous and open man, and it was a privilage to spend even a small amount of time in his company.
He's also a genius on stage.
