Gambling Routines

Postby S/G » Jun 10th, '10, 02:23

Hey guys,

I am wondering where I can find good gambling routines such as the ones that Ricky Jay does (although the language does not have to be so cryptic). I have always loved those and have always wanted to learn them. Do you guys have any good resources that I can look into?

Paul Wilson has a good one,Lennart green of course. My favourite gambling demonstration would be the rollover aces.

Depends whether you want to do gambling flavoured card magic or gambling demonstrations - if it's the suit revelation you are after then Greg Wilson and Pete Wardell have them & Jim Swain's is based on producing progressively higher poker hands; Darwin Ortiz has numerous gambling based routines as do Martin Nash and Andrew Wimhurst, and for what looks like the real thing you can't beat Guy Hollingsworth's recycled stack routine in Father Roger's book.
If you are after less skill heavy routines you could look at some of the stacks in Rusduck's Cardiste, Nick Trost's routines and Sal Piacente has some excellent straightforward routines which look like gambling skill on his Lecture Notes dvds.
Skill level is the key I'm afraid - right now my favourite sleight free gambling routine is John Bannon's approach to the ten card poker deal from Mr Fantasy. Hope that helps.

@Lenoir: I would say that my skill level is moderate which is to say that I can do a decent bottom deal that can fool people that are not paying too close of attention. However, I am willing to put in a lot of practice to get to where I need to be. I can also do pretty good palms and am really focusing on how I can use these skills.

@Shaun McCree: I honestly don't know. I want there to be sleight of hand involved and at least some amount of effort. I really don't know what Ricky Jay's kind of demonstrations are. Could you clarify for me what the "suit revelation" is?

Thank you.

Read Expert Card Technique. It's all in there. Plus everything you can on Vernon.

Well, I have been. I am more looking into routines. I don't really like the ones in ECT. I am focusing on demos like the ones that Ricky Jay and Darwin Ortiz give. Are they not published?

In Darwin's books and DVDs, pretty much any routine you'll watch is published. Everything Ricky did in that video is either in ECT or Vernon's work.

Sorry, by the suit revelation I meant the flourishy sequence of revealing all the spades, say, in numerical order - usually concluding with the deck finishing in new deck order - it's often associated with Ricky Jay.
The free cutting of the aces in the link looks to me like a Marlo handling (give or take) and you'll find Darwin Ortiz does a similar looking (and more reliable) Jerry Hartman routine as a blindfolded ace cutting routine - I completely agree with Lenoir that if that's the stuff you are after then Darwin's books/dvds are probably the way for you to go - there are more than enough gambling routines there to keep you going and his crediting is excellent so you can move outwards from there.
However it sounds like you may have to put in a bit of work if you want to go that way - some of Darwin's routines are fairly heavy duty.

Thanks guys. Really sorry for all the questions, but I have one more. I really am completely new to this.

Where can I find all of these books? Is eBay my best choice?

Thanks again.
