One would think so but this is not the case, people who come across "stupid" are actually very good at working out how a trick is done one theory on this is that they think linear. Coin is not in his left hand must be in his right hand it is all to do with being able to suspend belief.

David Stone mentions this in his excellent book as well. If you haven't read this I suggest you do.
