My wife was reading a write up of the England v USA footie match on-line today. After the review there was a forum type thing where readers could post up their comments. My wife was shocked to read the torrent of hate and filth that was directed at the English by people in Scotland, Wales, Ireland etc. In fact it quite upset her and it got me to thinking. If the comments made against the English (and the general level of racism shown towards the English) by people in Scotland, Wales & Ireland were made against any other nationality, there would be an outcry. Likewise if English people were as angry about the the Scots etc., there would be an outcry. However it seems to be okay to publicly slag off the English and support any other football team but England. It's such a shame because I've found that the English tend to actually support Scotland, Wales etc when they're playing international matches. I can even remember in the 94 world cup (I think) actually going into a bar in Corfu to support Ireland when they were playing Holland. I wonder how many Irish boys were supporting England against the USA? I've even seen on Facebook non-English British people with Soccer USA badges as their pictures. Sheesh. Do you really hate England that much?

It's such a shame as well because the English are the mongrels of Europe. We're all descendants of Scots, Irish, Welsh and various other European countries. Tsk. Bad form if you ask me. Racism is racism.

I have lived in Wales most of my life and the general support for sport is pretty anti-English.

It comes from Wales' little man syndrome. The welsh don't like being shown to be integrated with England as they like to think it is their own country and not a principality. With the excessive amount of England football advertising on their TV sets, it feels a little invasive to them. The amount of welsh Facebook friends who have posted that they are sick of the World Cup already, when it is clearly the focus on England that is getting on their nerves, is staggering. If it was Wales in those adverts, they would be over the moon.

I was born in England but before I get flamed by Welsh members, I speak a lot more Welsh than about 78% of the population and I have by no means refused learning about the culture that I have been immersed in for about 21 years.

I think the people with this attitude are going with the mob mentality and really need to stop and listen to themselves.

I bet you most of them would run a mile if they were asked to fight for their country, so I find their false patriotism quite idiotic.

Well i am pure English, and although i am against flaming/insults against our Country/team, i hate football, and i think its pointless, so i cheer for every team we face against.

I refuse to watch overpaid young men kick a ball about and pretend they broke their ankle every 5 minutes when people are suffering all around the world...

Is it really anger, or just that thing that footy fans do ?
It brings out the tribal instincts. A handful of idiots take it too far but most people just see it as a bit of goading.

I must say I agree that the English football team are a bunch of overpaid numpties. They earn more in a week than most of us can dream of earning in a year, and yet everytime they are in a major competition they manage to make a mess of it.

Compare the amount of coverage football gets against the coverage other sports get. The English cricket team won the Twenty20 world cup. Yes, that's right folks, they WON it. How much coverage did it get? About 5 minutes on the 10 o'clock news.

Hamilton & Button came 1st & 2nd at the Toronto Grand Prix. Amount of coverage on the news? 3 minutes. England football team who managed a lame 1 - 1 draw with the USA - probably close to 20 minutes.

Ooh, I'm in a mood tonight!

Haha, maybe one of us should turn the football invisible, then the world cup would be worth watching :P

Is there a female volleyball/mud wrestling world cup? I'd tune into that.

You need to follow the England Ladies team. They're fearless and a damned good footy team with some excellent strikers.

Predictable and infradig, old boy. They could play keepy uppy with your gentleman's area all day.

You'll see a far higher standard of football than the overpaid bunch of hairdressers we normally call "In-gur-land". Disciplined, fast, team players with absolutely no prima donas.

And they're good at it!

Oh, I'm sure they are. As I said earlier, the male England team are overpaid numpties, happier on the golf course and the cover of Hello! magazine than on a football pitch.
