The Revelation Technique - Mentalism and Mind Reading Trick

Postby Dineaux » Jun 21st, '10, 02:25

The Effect
The spectator is asked to write down a name/place/animal or anything they want on a business card. This card is folded up by the spectator . The mentalist now asks some questions in order to make a prediction. The mentalist is now able to predict exactly what the spectator has written down.
(Please watch the video to get a better idea of the trick: http://www.therevelationtechnique.com

Included bonus trick –Pokerface:

The spectator is told to pick 5 random cards face down from a deck. The spectator then picks one of the 5 cards which becomes his chosen card. After he has memorized his card the spectator is asked to shuffle the 5 cards and give them to the magician.

The magician now explains to the spectator that he will show him the 5 cards one by one and ask the spectator if this is his chosen card. The magician want the spectator to answer “no” at every card.

The magician talks about how the body is unable to tell lies and that an trained eye can detect micro facial expressions on someone to see if they are telling the truth or not.

After asking the spectator if the card shown is his, and received a “no” to all questions, he reveals the chosen card.

Cost
The special offer price is a dirt cheap $20 till the 25th of June. I’m not sure what the price will be after that and if it will include the bonuses.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
I’ll give it a 1.5. The difficult bit is the presentation. You need to be subtle and very believable. The technical bit is very easy.

Review

When I first saw the website of this trick a few days ago I was immediately interested because it reminded me a lot of Derren Brown which I am a big fan of. I am a hobby magician and only do tricks for my friend for my and their amusement. So I lean more toward the impromptu “street magic style” but with big climaxes. I only buy tricks that need minimal preparation and no gimmicks and The Revelation Technique qualifies.

Derren Brown does these types of tricks but uses real muscle reading and other psychological tricks that fraudulent psychics use.
I was hoping that this trick would be some of that, but it isn’t which was slightly disappointing. But after I’d practiced the routine a bit and tried it out on some friends, I realized that it was worth every penny(which isn’t much).

Like most magic tricks it’s all in the presentation. If your not good with the “acting” side of magic then this trick isn’t for you!
I also really loved the bonus trick called Pokerface. I gladly would have paid 20 bucks for this trick alone!

The tricks are immediately downloadable after purchase which is awesome of course. You receive asses to a 40 minute video for the trick with performances and the explanation.

Overall
Overall I find The Revelation Technique a very cool trick that can be preformed on the street or at party’s. I can imagine that experienced magicians will not find these tricks worth their money or already know variation of these tricks. But as an intermediate magician I really liked the trick and found the video tutorials very useful.
Please watch the video of The Revelation Technique to get a better idea of the trick.

That looks really good.

On a related note, I really need to buy some old rope, do you sell any on your website?

Like I said, for experienced magicians this could be stuff that you already know how to do. But for hobby magicians like myself, I really enjoyed not only the trick but the video tutorial as well.

<constructive criticism>
Why is the first part of the performance not shown on the vid? The first few seconds of the video is of a black screen with audio only. By the time it cuts to the images, he's already into working out what the spec has written. None of the subsequent performances show the intro either, just the climax.

I am put off by the editing out of parts of the performance. It looks very impressive if the spec's reactions are anything to go by, but I'd want to see the whole thing before I'd consider buying it.

Well I guess they want to make it mysterious or something, I dunno.

Often when you look at the videos on Penguin Magic for example, you'll also see these neat edits that create suspense or hide a detail of the routine which could give it away to advanced magicians.
I sometimes even see video's where they digitally zoom in on 1 part of the screen in order to hide a specific movement or slight of hand by the magician.

But does this mean the trick is bad? Of course not. Or do you believe in real magic;)?

In the case of this video I'll tell you whats being done during the "blacked out" beginning..........Nothing!
The trick is done already. The magician already knows the answer.

Read my review again please;)

I will personally avoid buying this until I see a more reliable review, no offence mate, a new member joining just to post a review and not giving a direct link to the product but gives a bit.ly link instead (sure, everyone wants to make an extra buck, can't blame you for that) doesn't fully convince me.

I have always been put off by products that are promoted like this. Effects from quite unknown artists with testimonials from complete strangers that could easily be faked put me off slightly. But, I'd be lying if I said I am not somewhat intrigued.

Can you answer me this, is anything written down? It is never directly referred to but from watching the video I see the spectators holding a pen in a couple of the clips. Is something written down, or does it act as some sort of magic wand?

Like wishmaster, I'm also put off by the editing. Yes, I have seen editing in certain card effects to hide specific moves, but I feel as if all of the actual "mechanics" (not sure if that is the right word) of the effect have been cut out and only the revelation part has been shown. Unless, of course, this is how he finds the information. On the other hand, I guess we see things like how a spectator will see them, which I guess is alright.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - IT HAS BEEN VERIFIED AS THE RESELLING OF AN EXISTING PRODUCT...

ray thompson from the magic cafe wrote:We should be able to be specific to some extent here at least enough to say he is selling "Acidus Novis". He does credit Millard Longman, but doesn't say he has permission to repackage and sell it.

From reading the description of the Pokerface, it sounds like it's not the only repackaged work of another big name in the field.

@Cens*rship: Like I already said in the review. Something IS written down in the beginning. Yes I am promoting this trick, but only because I genuinely like it. I HAVE paid the 20 bucks to download it(btw it's now 40).

@the others: LIKE I SAID IN MY REVIEW(please people, read the whole thing) I am a beginner to mid level magic enthusiast and only practice as a hobby. I'm sure all the tricks have been done a zillian times before by all the greats out there.

But hey, I like it so maybe someone else will like it too. I always wanted to know some impromptu mentalism tricks that can be done anywhere and any time and this is it.

Today I even received a third card-mentalism trick in my inbox for FREE from these guys! Good stuff and fun times

There isn't more I can say without revealing this trick. I've coverd it all.

Go to www.therevelationtechnique.com for more info(this is the direct link. No affiliation.)

I said Good Day!

Apologies. That was totally my mistake. The weird thing is, I remember reading what you said about writing things down but I still asked you anyway, got ahead of myself.

Does anyone know where else I can learn this technique? From what I hear the book Peek Encores has information on it, does anyone know of any other sources?

And, yes, it is somewhat viral (not sure if it's the right word). I got an email from someone I subscribed to about 3 years ago, it was the first email I got from him in like 2 years :? .

Dineaux, we're not mentioning that "it's been done before" to make you feel bad - we're trying to get word out (here and on other forums) that this product is, essentially, stealing from others. It's not being pointed out as an attack on you and your level of ability.
