Practising PCT - I'm so confused

Postby Eshly » Jul 9th, '10, 17:15

The title says it all. Maybe I'm just stupid, but I cannot understand nor follow the instructions on Mind Mysteries 1.

I am trying to learn the Perfected Center Tear, as a sort of 'upgrade' to what I already perform, and I cannot understand how its done. In my opinion the camera angels and instruction is a bit confusing, but maybe thats just me.

Any help?

I suspect there is a link between those who love Magic and those who love Doctor Who... ;)

Isn't this one for "Support & Tips"?

Anyway, my suggestions (as far as I can go on an open board) are:

Get some suitable paper. You can do this with pretty much anything, but hunting around for the right pad will help. There used to be a shop about a mile away from me that sold four packs of absolutely perfect pads, and I bought loads. Shame they went out of business.

I suggest that, initially, you get a bigger piece of paper (such as A4) and cut it down. Try rotating the paper by 90%, as it has a grain and the moves may be easier with the paper orientated in a particular direction.

Part of the secret is in the second fold. Pay close attention to what Richard says. This might be where you are going wrong.

The next bit of the secret is in the second tear. If you have done the second fold right, after you do the first tear and bring your hands together, it should be obvious what you need to do.

Or, learn it from the book, like I did. :D

I suspect he's looking at a trick from a method POV rather than an effect POV.

but anyway...

Edit: actually, i'll go rewatch mind mysteries this afternoon so I actually know what I'm talking about and come back with a more sensible post

There are lots of different sorts of CT. Eshly's asking about Richard Osterlind's version.

No sure, I get what both you and Lawrence said. I've read the blurb in Hank Lees magic factory. I just can't see any difference. I can do the classics C.T surrounded, I can drop it in a specs hand (although I won't). I just don't see how a C.T could be more invisible or easy.

And I'm not asking this to take the * I'm just genuinely curious.

Now, I get you!

If you think about a standard CT, it has a few weaknesses. I don't really want to go into them on an open board, but you strike me as an able sort of chap, and more than bright enough to figure them out, if you don't already know.

People have developed various different methods in order to eliminate, or reduce the effect of, some of those weaknesses. Well, they think they do. Sometimes they end up making things worse, in my opinion.

I am not sure that Osterlind's version is easier than the standard variety, but you end completely clean. I like it, and have used it to good effect, but if you are entirely happy with what you do, why waste time and money changing? :)

Before even attempting to learn it, ask yourself why you need it? As sacrilege as it is, I think it's a redundant concept now. Ever since the banning of smoking in...well, pretty much everywhere, is has lost its use and since the invention of some very devious peeks, it just isn't justified.
