The Raven coin vanish problems

Postby IBREW94 » Jul 23rd, '10, 04:56

Hi guys, im new to this forum. I am 16 years old and have done magic for about 2 years. I recently picked up a raven at the local store here in Atlanta and i love it. The only problem is that whenever i use it with hoodies or dress shirts it snags on the cuff (if you have the trick you know what i mean). Can someone reccomend some clothes that will work well with it? Or a setup that will work better and prevent snags? I love this trick to bits and i don't want to not find a use for it.
ps. i wear alot of long sleeve button-up shirts and hoodies

Also, I spotted your problem...

There it is.

Just do a retention vanish perhaps?

I'd probabaly agree with Lawrence, I bought a Raven but quickly gave up with it. Get yourself a copy of Bobo and you'll learn the sleights to do vanishes without having to worry about the Raven.

seriously....Good jeans, a great white, or cream shirt , open at the neck, and a dinner jacket are so in at the moment, with either good black shoes, or a pair of classic converse.

It is THE smart casual look , and the beauty is you can probably get the jacket for next to nothing at your local charity shop.

At 16, just starting out in magic, the best thing you can do when performing is Dress to impress, because if you dont, you will blend into the crowd.

( and Chris Angel wears the jacket and Jeans combo quite a bit )
Trust me... its a look that makes a statement.

Just make sure it fits... his doesnt :)

I should add....
It has always amazed me that people are willing to spend 40-50- up to 200 + pounds on a gimmick, like Raven, or one of the hold outs that are around, but are reluctant to wear apropriate clothing for the gimmick.

why?

The thing about the retention vanish is that i did it pretty well after practicing it in the mirror. It was actually one of the first tricks i learned. But im not really using the raven for vanishes, more for transformations, and teleportations. I also have a scotch and soda trick and the coin for it is magnetic so i can incorperate the raven into it. The vanishing coin off the spectators hand is great. I did it so my sister and she nearly crapped herself.
The retention vanish is great, and im looking for getting a bobos modern coin magic book soon, but i love how i can transform a coin into another and be clean afterwards. Its just that i never EVER wear dinner jackets to school and thats where i like to show off a bit of magic. I dont want to sound stubborn here.

O and has anyone seen Sick by Ponta the Smith yet? its on ellusionist.com and it look amazing

( and dont take it the wrong way)

Show off?

and stop buying tricks, by books, by dvds, and learn magic.

theres a huge difference, and you will save a fortune in the process....

( maybe enough to buy that jacket..or at least a top that unzips at the front. THEN you can un tuck your shirt, and use the belt loop fitting for Raven, as mentioned in the instructions )

im sorry if i came off the wrong way, "show off" was the wrong choice of words. I do magic because of the wonder of it and when you do a trick or slight that confuses someone, its the reaction that makes me happy. I know exactly what you mean by stop buying tricks and buy books, dvds and learn. You want me to learn the basics of magic before trying something complicated. I totally understand what you mean. Can you suggest some books for me? (other than bobo as im about to get it)

I'll list a few, but I suggest you go to the introduction section and let us all know a bit more about your areas of magical interest and current level of understanding.

Mark Wilson-complete guide to magic is a good all rounder. Some cards, coins, mental, etc.

Bobo has already been mentioned for coins.

The royal road to card magic.

Scarne on card tricks is a good sleight free option for cards.

mark wilson will also teach the basic set up for the belt loop method.. although not with the raven naturally.

i hear nothing but praise for Josua Jays book

http://www.joshuajay.com/store/item1.html

Its available all over the place, and comes complete with a very good dvd.

all the Fulves self working books are a must. They cost next to nothing, but contain some of the best magic i have ever come across.

I know this is going to sound very nit picking, but I'm going to say it anyway. IBrew you mentioned you already perform the retention vanish. Nobody performes a retention vanish if you are, you are seriously not understanding the concept of magic. You are supposed to be performing a magic effect of which a retention vanish is utilized.

before you jump down my throat I know, or rather trust that you are not actually performing the vanish and it was just a turn of phrase on your part. However way too many times magicians get caught up in method and I do start to see magicians start to perform the method rather than the effect, in other words absolutly no presentation.

Too many times I've had magicians come up to me to show me the 'pass'. I always tell them to show me the routine/effect they are working on as just showing me the move tells me nothing about how it will look during their performance.

As for the appropriate dress for the Raven, always dress like you have somewhere better to go afterwards. Packaging sells and what a magi wears is part of the entire experience for the spectator.

Having been a magic dealer for many years I can offer some advice on buying a magic effect. KNOW YOUR LIMITS AND YOUR VENUES. If you want to perform in jeans and a t-shirt let your magic dealer know, that way they won't show you something like the Raven, what is the point you can't use it effectivly and there are a ton of gimmicks and yes sleights out there you can use to achieve the same effect that do not require the same restrictions a Raven has.

It is kind of like selling a grand piano to a street busking musician. Or an effect that you have to really watch your angles to a magician who mostly performs in the round.
