Newb says ... Hi?

Postby Cpfoxhunt » Jul 25th, '10, 18:22

Hello,

I found this sight when I was searching for reviews of the Fearson Master Levitation system (now acquired), and it appears to be a rather cool place indeed. Given that this is my first non 'marvins magic' trick, I guess that makes me a complete beginner.

So erm Hi, hows it going? Apart from reading the rules, does anybody have any tips or words of advice for someone starting out?

C

I realised that just about as soon as I learned a couple of the levitation tricks. Whilst satisfying and relatively easy (technique wise rather than performance wise) I certainly can't do one for any length of time without people twigging. *goes and gets card and coin books out of the local library*

I think everyone starts out like that, getting gimmicks or silly little tricks to satisfy curiosity.
But at least you have realised this relatively early on and have decided to pick up some books.

Which Marvins Magic tricks did you get? I started as well on these, and still use some as they are so easy to use and give a good reaction.

Also, why or how did you get into magic?

Oh, and welcome!

Hiya and welcome to TM.

If you're looking for a good book to get you started, Mark Wilson's Complete Course is well worth getting hold of. :D

I managed to get Ogdens "the Complete idiots guide to magic tricks" and Bobo "Modern Coin Magic" from my library and am redwing the first of them at the moment. I will look out the book you recommended after this but before Bobo judging by what people on here have said.

Of the marvins tricks, I have a gimmicked Svengali deck, a pencil through coins effect and one of the transported ten pence tricks, with the last of these being my favourite.

I decided to actually try and get in to amateur magic after seeing David Copperfield perform in Vegas. It was very interesting, and whilst I think I might know at least part of the method to some of what he did, (especially having seen the fearson DVD) it left me with a genuine sense of wonder.

I also recently read the Derren Brown book. He seems to be fairly reviled on the net (not suree about on here), but he describes a coin trick which is stunningly effective and mostly psychology. The reaction to it is out of all proportion to the trick, but I've never had anything to follow it up with.

Also a hobby that doesn't involve computer games is probably advisable!

Welcome to TM! Derren is well liked here and it's great when we see him doing very basic stuff but in his own baffling style. If you have a good library close at hand, get them to check and bring in as many magic books as they can find from other branches. Once you've borrowed and read them you can decide which ones to actually buy.

Welcome! You might want to start a new intros thread and remove those links from your signature, as we don't really like ads here (unless you've paid to put them there, of course), especially when they are nothing to do with magic.

Welcome, I would suggest (if your looking at card magic) Royal Road to Card Magic by Jean Hugard & Frederick Braue... That was my first book given to me by my Dad, was absolutly great.
