if you open this site up. It is the most interesting site, dealing with the history of theatres all over the country. Many lost for ever, some comming back.

And every link you click takes you to some of the most interesting facts, and photographs Ive seen in many years.

and there is plenty of magic related historical info too. Just do a search for magician, or conjurer, and see what comes up.

What has this got to do with Magic or Mentalism?

Everything, I would have thought. From knowing & understanding the roots of your art through to researching favourite performers to perhaps looking for suitable venues to perform at.

Magic was, for a long time, a mainly theatre based experience.

If you don't understand how magic has played a part in history, if you don't know where it stands in the entertainment field, if you don't understand that magic is entertainment then you are sadly missing one of the largest aspects of magic and the entertainment field as a whole. Learn your history and you will be a better performer because you will learn that you are upholding a very noble art form.

Tom I absolutly love the way you seperate magic and mentalism each and every time. You do realize the only difference between the two is performance.

Unless you really believe you are a psychic, (which is a different field unless you are a magician pretending to be a psychic) and then you are on the wrong message board.

I lurk on these forums a lot but hardly ever post , I wanted to thank Dale for pointing me to this site. It is wonderful!

(It's a good job I'm not a regular poster as I could not be as patient with this Eshly fella as everyone else seems to be. He pretty much wastes everybodys time asking for advice he will never take and by the sounds of it wastes enough of his own.)

Again, great site!

Awesome site Dale, kudos!

Tom... I have vague recollection of some old guy encouraging you to dive into history a bit... I could be wrong but I'm pretty certain that would be the case, given the fact that it is one of the things I stress almost constantly.

We can't possibly "grow" as entertainers if we don't understand what came before us and more importantly, what it means to be a showman. These are lessons we can only learn through a vested study of Theater (technical as well as acting itself and the business end), Carnivals/Circus, as well as the Vaudeville & Burlesque eras.

IF Magicians are "but actors play a part" you'd think they'd invest far more time learning to be ACTORS rather than a new card trick

Hell's Bells! The Theatre Royal, New Street, Birmingham was where I saw my first pantomime when I was knee high to a grasshopper - just looking at the photo the memories are flooding back!!
