There are several threads about previous Blackpool conventions in the Events section. The one for Blackpool 2011 is at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic34287.php

4 aces tricks, spangly waistcoats, trendy-hypno-touch-ups, constant fanning (a 1930s erotic artiste), beer, fear, crippling shyness hidden under props and the occassional lecture...

i've not been, but i am psychic...

I'm not psychic but I with him

Est. costs

£100 - ticket
£90 - 3 nights in a B&B
£40 - Travel
£50 - Food
£lots - Booze
£lots - Magic purchases of the latest over hyped product you'll never use

For that price you could go on a long weekend to a nice european getaway spot although it would mean you'd need to find someone to go with and note if travelling toItaly or France leave your spangly waistcoat at home (passport control has style legislation).

or you can go to a smaller convention. Its possible to do a good weekend for under £130. and that includes all the above.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Do Blackpool once and you'l appreciate how good the smaller conventions are. but if you love magic then you do have to do Blackpool at least once. It is an experience.

Never been to blackpool, but I am sure it is like the others. If they have stage competition, you forgot the doves. Why is it after every convention I have been too I walk away with a craving for chicken?

The IBM convention in Southport is a good one, and is coming up soon. It is almost as big as Blackpool, but spread out over longer, and more friendly. It's the one I would go for - plenty of lectures, plenty of dealers, plenty of fun. It's in September.

The biggest expenses are the tickets to the convention itself and then your accommodation if staying over for more than one day. And then possibly the huge sums you'll spend in the dealer hall (over 100 dealers!).And then perhaps the drinks bill in the Ruskin. And you might want to buy food at some point.

Hotels at that time of year near the Winter Gardens are usually plentiful although many of them close for refurbishment during the quiet season. The lower cost ones may be quite a walk away so take into account the early start of some of the lectures compared to hotel breakfast times – if such is included!

Of course, you don’t need to spend a lot in the Dealer Hall but there are usually some ‘Blackpool Only’ bargains to be had, there are the obvious savings on P&P compared to ordering items online or by phone, and you don’t need to spend a lot in The Ruskin.

Blackpool is big, brash, very crowded at times and, from past experience, there’s usually very little free time during the day, in fact there’s usually too much going on at the same time so choices have to be made and you will miss out on some of the activities. 2011 sees it billed as FISM Europe and things are different so it’s still very much an unknown quantity. Other conventions are usually more relaxed but at least one visit to Blackpool is a good idea even if it puts you off for life!
