My first Egg Bag was a red one. Made by Ellisdons (E & S) around 1945. I had to use a real egg and they were scarce then.Carried it round wrapped in cotton wool.
The best egg bag and routine (and mine is based on this) is Ali Ben Ali's put out by Magick Enterprises (Russell Hall) in Sheffield. This is a black bag with a SMALL POCKET, approx 4 inches x 4 inches, near the top. ie not the usual double sided version. It is NOT expensive. Ali Ben Ali( Brian McLernon) also details the routine in his book Down Your Alley( costs about £8 with other great routines in it as well) Brian , I understand died quite young. His humour shines through the several books he authored and I wish I had met him. You do feel you get to know him from the books. Now although this bag works so easily I have a thing AGAINST BLACK BAGS. Comes from the days of wearing a dinner jacket..black against black & possibly my first Bag. I've had it re made in maroon. The small pocket is not Brian's invention. Len Belcher in Abra Vol. 66, No. 1700, 26th. August 1978 also put out his Egg Bag routine (excellent) using a bag with a small pocket and he didn't know who originated it.
I can send you this if you want it. it uses 2 kids. Both these routines work well with adults, though I favour Brian's.
Literature. There is the inexpensive Knowing The Egg Bag by Will Ayling (Supreme)34 pages, Costs £7:50. And the larger tome, The Egg Bag Book by John Novak. 104 pages, £16 ( Magic Books By Post)This covers many versions of the trick with illustrations on making your own. Then there's Roy Bakers routine. This he did on the halls many years. The Malini one(which I always found a bit tricksy) is detailed in the 2 books above. I'd stick with Ali Ben Ali if it's new to you. My own routine ends as follows, and you're welcome to use it. In my right pocket is a large plastic egg about 4 1/2 inches. It once contained a jig saw. You could get a card board gift egg at Easter and cover it white. Inside this are 4 latex eggs.& a really TINY egg. When the spectator is removing the egg for the final time, he is warned to keep his hand closed so as to preserve the surprise for the audience and to wait for his applause! As he takes it from the bag, his body covers your right hand and your right side of your body. That's when you cop the big egg. As he opens his hand to reveal THE egg, all eyes are on him, the bag has momentarily gone out out sight behind him and you load in the big egg. Now you reach in , break open the egg, (it is selotape hinged) saying, "You missed this one" The tiny egg. And you missed this one ..and this one..and this one..and( PAUSE FOR AUDIENCE TO CALL OUT) this one. (4 latex) And heaven knows(during this line you, reach in with both hands, & clip the big egg together)
And I certainly don't know how you could missed this one." "Give him a big hand." Sometimes. " I pity the chicken who laid this one ! "
Prior to his final reach into the bag, I have given him an egg box to hold. so he can place the solid egg in. I place the tiny & latex eggs in. Not the big one. That goes back into the bag as I take the egg box off him. It does create lots of laughs. On odd occasions I have used a load of (stuck together) baked beans..from a joke shop. The idea of his left side covering your right side is very useful for other loads as the 11 card trick but that's another story.
