So my girlfriend wants to learn some magic...

Postby crozboz » Aug 23rd, '10, 21:59

and she asked me to show her a few tricks that she could learn.

She's my girlfriend, so all magic circle/IBM codes of conduct aside, i offer to show her how to do them, so she can do some too.

I show her the usual easy tricks. Poker players picnic, key card, four burglars etc. so she can decide what she wants to learn.

Instead she mentions a few tricks she sees me do when actually performing regularly.

She's now learning the muscle pass, mnemonica & the clip shift.

Can anyone suggest something to teach her that is impressive but easy? :P

awkward times.

Fair play to her if she's learning the muscle pass all ready! Good luck to her!

If she is enthusiastic then that is great, and should be encouraged. Although I don't personally like it, an ambitious card routine might be a good one - she can learn to incorporate sleights into a tight routine, and that is good in itself.

Teach her a sponge ball routine too. A cut and restored rope is simple, yet audiences love it.

It is all impresive, its how you perform it, not how its done. Have her find an effect she really likes despite the difficulty level and go with that.

its not so much about her going out and performing it for large audiences.

She's a world champion linedancer, so when we go out, she's got all this skill that nobody can see, because its not really normal to up and dance in public.

She also just gets jealous of me performing on a whim if someone asks. so its more about giving her something to do than a solid routine.

She's already up to 26 in mnemonica to be fair to her, and she just got some height from a morgan silver dollar!

A very impressive effect and one that is easy to learn is Obliging Aces from Royal Road To Card magic.

My Girl Friend Wants to learn some magic

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 24th, '10, 10:56

It is so horribly typical of MOST magicians that when anyone shows an interest in Magic--especially how it works--they trot out the methods instantly.
Even, in some cases, where those methods are their living or part living.

No wonder Magic is looked down upon, in a lot of the Publics' eyes and in their opinions.
Numerous members of the Public and some magicians have LOST respect for Magic due to letting people know it can be very easy--method wise.
They fail to appreciate that it is the Presentation that makes it both mystifying, wondrous, enjoyable and entertaining.
NOT just a PUZZLE to be solved!

I have even been at Magic Shows in Nottingham's theatres and in the interval, listened to groups of magicians explaining & discussing methods LOUDLY to other magicians and with lay people in their groups not to mention other members of the Public standing by them--overhearing--as they all seem to want to talk so loudly!
If they used that Voice Projection in their performances we would have less use of mikes, often over amplified.

Many are making Magic so CHEAP and TOO accessible to all and sundry.

In the case of a girl friend. Teach her and eventually you will lose her!
And I know a good 6 magicians this has happened to.!!!

Clive Webb used to do a great trick where he would invite Sally James to stand in a wooden cabinet and then he would pour buckets of custard through the top of it to prove that she had disappeared. Perhaps you could try and get that one to work on her as it never worked when he did it.

Seriously though, if she learned tricks that you wouldn't normally do, that aren't your style, and vice versa then you will start to develop a "two man" routine where you both do tricks that compliment each other, rather than you both being good at and performing the same tricks. This would also allow you to keep your own secrets safe.

AND what if she gets better than you????

Rule 1. IF you must tie her in with your magic..marry her first.

I think Allen Tipton speaks goods sense. Women like men with some mystery about them. If you reveal all your secrets to her then there is no more mystery.
