add a number

Postby jackleg » Aug 25th, '10, 20:33

Hi guys

One for the mentalists out there..

I'm looking for a clipboard/folio that can be used as an add a number device. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I've used note pad style to great effect but I intend to use the clip board (or similar) for another effect or two so I'd like it to "blend in" with the other props I'm using, plus it matches the theme of the presentation style.

Any pointers would be as usual greatly received.
:D

you could make one?

or check out ed fowler's notepad one...

or (i think) john riggs' messiah process if its still available?

if you wanted to go with a gimmicked pad, the new sartori one is very nice, and very easy to refill - and actually looks like a posh notepad...

if anyone else chips in, PLEASE be careful with your descriptions - i have a soft spot for these things and i dont want it accidently exposed :D

If you want to make yourself a cheap folio, Banachek describes one that he uses for Q&A that could work..

I am not sure what an add a number board is, but as pointed out before Banachek uses something to add numbers which can be selfmade in PSI 1 iirc. But I think it's not the one talked of, as it would not be suitable for preshow work. It's just a device specially desinged to "only" add up numbers. Couldn't be used for envelope stuff imho.

Thus the question, where is it that Banachek does describe the other one?

The thing he uses for image duplication, could be used for adding numbers too, I think. Those range from cheap to not so cheap, depending on where you would buy it and if it's availabe in your country. But to my knowledge they are still produced with the same design he uses them, it's just sometimes not easy to find a supplier, just try big stores.

PS. What is a folio in this context?

My Add A Number Pad went awol near the end of my run at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. I didn't have time to buy a replacement, but needed to find an alternative method pdq.

I ended up handing out a business card. Spectators wrote their contributions on the back - very freely handing it from person to person, as it was just a single piece of card.

I then had it sealed in a little envelope, and asked somebody on the front row to keep it safe until it was called for.

I never actually touched the card. And the method was brought in from another effect I do, that has nothing to do with the add-a-number effect. If you know mentalism, you've probably already guessed it.

Is this the one he showed at Tabula Mentis?

There's a non-mechanical switch, using index cards, in 13 Steps.

Or two methods requiring no switch in Modern Magic Manual by Jean Hugard (yes, I know I keep pushing that book, but it was my first magic "bible").
